Narnain Boulder Dash

Well done to the 8 Westies who turned up for the 4th running of the Narnain Boulder Dash club handicap. The handful of runners who made the effort were rewarded with a fantastic sunny evening at Arrochar that turned out to be almost midge free.

Donald Evans proved that last year wasn't a fluke by breaking his own course record, clocking by far the fastest time of 35:48. Muffy was fastest lady in 51:03, which was 1 second faster than Stuart Burns!

Well done Donald, that's a great time. But this race used to be a handicap. Is it just being run as a straight race now? In previous years I have so much enjoyed being overhauled by the speed kings on the lower slopes; the pressure eases once you're at the back and can really start to enjoy the event.

It is still a club handicap. Usual format. I think Muffy was first back. I was assuming that Andy Mott had won the handicap, but he bust his ankle on the descent. I missed my start slot by jogging too far up the hill with Donald beforehand, so I was never going to catch any of the regulars, but managed to pass first-timer Maria towards the end of the descent, and I also went by Johnston who appeared to be walking off the hill.

A fine evening for a run, contrary to what was forecast, and thanks to Chris for organising. I may not have been quick, but I still have 2 functioning ankles today. Andy's injury looked nasty. Hope it wasn't as bad as it first appeared.

Quick trip to A+E confirmed that the ankle was not broken and just badly sprained which is great and hopefully means I'll be back next week.

I was so annoyed at falling over, figure it must have cost me at least 3 mins on the way back down as I had to hop / hobble the last section from the transmission aerial.

I'll also never forget the whoop of delight I heard from Muffy as, on seeing my hobbling figure ahead of her, she realised that she'd be able to come in first.

It was a lovely evening and I enjoyed my first club run apart from Andy's unfortunate ankle accident. To begin with, I thought it would be me who will be heading for A+E aftewards! I admit I struggled a bit on the way up but it was still worth the effort - thank you for cheering me up on the way, it kept me going!!

    'Doug',

How useful are you at an arse-kicking contest?

Andy - I hope the ankle settles down soon. You'll need to tape it for a while when you start back running.

Well done all who turned up. I would have been there but for a late finish at work in Lanark at 6pm, so I ran my own wee handicap race up and down Tinto Hill. I won at canter, despite a horrendous handicap. And I also won the arse-kicking contest. Times, photos and results to follow.

Oh dear Andy. I feel your pain. I too lost my ankle ligament virginity on the path down from the Narnain boulders on a warm, still evening in June 2007. The angle of that slightly rocky, ever-so slippery descent seduces one down at frightening speeds as if to the hypnotising call of sirens, and before you know it, you're in the smelly waiting area of the Western A&E,and forever more having to locate rolls duct tape from the boot of your car to ensure your feet are well stuck to your legs before any hill run. Nasty.

Och well, impressive to hear Maria managed to stay upright on her first ever club run- welcome to the sure-footed Westies Maria.
