Yetholm Hill Race 2009

After a romantic Westies weekend for two at Kirk Yetholm Youth Hostel (where the Calders were at least 20 years more youthful than any other resident), it was off to the local pub for a spot of morning coffee (caffeine that well known race stimulant). After the barman ascertained we were hinging about waiting for a hill race, and we knew Damon, he said, "Ah, he's that lad that built the house from hay, isn't he? But he's still nice". The aforementioned Damon did indeed turn up for the race (with family, all in fine form), sporting a Westies top, but, sadly, Gala trousers. The race, was, well a hill race. That means lung and leg busting hard. The course was backwards this year, seems like a good way to go about it - get the hard climbs over during the first half. I have to admit this is the loveliest hill race route I have ever done, the second half on the Penine Way was just superb. For a while I felt that I would never run again, after climbing that cussed Curr hill, but the views and a jelly baby from the marshall go me going again.

Damon was second, just beaten by Adam Ward. Dave was first birthday boy and I was 3rd lady and 1st very old lady. Dick Wall and Shelagh King turned the event into an International, after stepping off piste, into England (and back again).

Highlight of the day was soup with the Rodwell menagerie: lovely boys, clever cat, two dugs, a horse and a donkey. The last was saved from the cooker only because more Westies didn't turn up. Whilst I am glad the donkey was saved, it's a shame there weren't more Westies.

    Muffy, Damon, and Dave,

Sorry we couldn't be there, but a wheen o'Westies were in Ardgour with Manny on his bid for self-destruction. Apart from the Gorman clan, I counted 11 - me, JD, Stevie Bell, Dave Rogers, Don, Donald, Shona, Chris, Ellie, David Riach, and Steffen. (Apologies to any I've missed.) Cat and Bill were also spotted in Glencoe as JD and I were heading home.

Hope the donkey is still alive (and a little bit more tubby) next year!

Thanks for the kind words and the enthusiastic report, Muffy. Cracking race this year, especially sweet as this time we could see where we were going and no-one got lost. Even the sight of wee Adam grinding away from me over the second half couldn't spoil the day. Next year they're talking about holding it on the first Saturday in October, in conjunction with the Yetholm agricultural show, which would lend it a sense of occasion with plenty of yokels, sheep and shivering villagers to cheer the runners home.
My boys particularly enjoyed celebrating Dave's birthday with a chocolate muffin with a candle, a completely tuneless rendition of "Happy Birthday" (tunelessness was down to Muffy, I'm afraid) and a 60-degree slice of muffin each.
Hope to see a good crowd next year.

Not much more to be said. It was a great race and the Rodwell residence is a very fine place indeed.
Kirk Yetholm Youth Hostel would be an excellent venue for a Westies weekend; 20 beds and lots of absolutely brilliant routes within easy reach!

Great place to celebrate your birthday Dave, in Yetholm & environs - God's own country, as the wee D man keeps saying. Can't believe that's you in to your last year as a 40 something, then again, I can't believe I'm in my last year as a 30 something. Anyway, you and the very good lady Muffy will have made the Leprechaun's day with your visit, so well done. Roll on the next decade...

    :-)

Ah yes, of course, Happy Birthday Dave, should have realised, what with our visit last year to the inaugural Gargunnock Race. 'Course better not mention for your Birthday last year the Lady taking registration promised you a full de-briefing at the end. Think we got away with that strictly between ourselves.
Sorry to have missed this one, spent the week-end in Glenturret Distillery and slumming it at Crieff Hydro.......then woke up.
