Kilpatricks Hill Race 2009
Well it’s the first time I’ve been on time for or even found the Kilpatricks Hillrace so things were looking good at the start. The May training plan of rock climbing and running once at Dumyat ensured I was at the peak of physical fitness for this gruelling race. (Shame it was for the wrong sport ! – oh well)
And we were off, along the tarmac and up into the hills. Helen caught me near the top of the first hill – “never mind with these new shoes I’ll get her on the decent.” (Someone has been eating their porridge) Some overenthusiastic sweeping from Grim had me question whether or not I was in fact last. “No ther’s sum wummin behind” came the reply.
Over the hill and onto the flat and I managed to catch a good few places. With Helen & Deborah still in sight going up the slacks all was not lost – Just unleash the inner descending demon and all will be fine.
Trig point, wobbly chair, boot down – slap, face plant in the heather!
Descending composure regained, just in time for a stitch and cramp to kick in and the towel was well and truly thrown in. (in the huff!) A hobble to the finish gained some much needed bog & burn points. 8th place, 2nd Westie ……. lookin good ;-)
Big thanks to all the Westies who did the honourable thing and helped out running the race.

Good to see that Grim just keeps his one-liners rolling. As I was hyperventilating up the first ascent, cursing myself for turning up, I suddenly heard the dulcet tones of the Grim Sweeper from the slopes above..."Ah can see yer baldy bit from here!" Just what I needed to knock me out of my self-pitying torpor...keep it up Grim!
Great Westies wimmin performance with a 1-2-3 for Val, Elspeth and Cat and Helen getting the V50 prize.

I'd had my curry (minus Westie banter) and was sound asleep by the time you were all flogging up the first bit of road from the gas works. Given my current training regime, that's probably a good thing, as I might have been holding up the Grim Sweeper if I'd been there.
Very well done to the burdz. The boys can but dream of such glory.

Is the sweeper not meant to come along behind everyone?
I had a dreadful first climb (probably two hours of digging rocks out of my garden in the afternoon was not a good idea) but got more into my stride on the runnable stuff towards Loch Humphrey. From the high point beyond the loch I spotted a couple of runners down below in the bog and thought I was starting to catch up some stragglers only to find it was the Grim Sweeper and Robert - removing the markers. Just as well GS went ahead of me on the climb to the Slacks as I was able to pick up the markers he dropped. Then I made the mistake of following him at the start of the descent when he headed off route to collect a marker which turned out to be a lump of sheep's wool! Back on route I was finally able to take off and head for the finish unimpeded by the GS. Thanks to all who waited at the finish, hope the midges were not too bad. Average time for me, if only I had done better on the first climb ...

Just to echo thanks to everyone who was involved with the Kilpatricks - the event is a real credit to the club.
I will repay by marshalling at Arrochar !
I was over the moon to find I was a wee bit quicker than last year but failed to keep ahead of Mr Reid....grrrrrrrrrr. Must learn to descend better.
Curry was a topper and the perfect ending to the day.
