Weekend Double Whammy

As part of my taper towards London Marathon next Sunday, I decided to only run 2 short races at the weekend.

On Saturday I got hopelessly lost in Edinburgh before finding Holyrood Park and doing my first Hunter's Brog Trot. A 6.5km cross-country style 2-lap course around and over Salisbury Crags below Arthur's Seat. I was in 3rd place behind Joe Symonds and Phil Mowbray on the first climb over Salisbury Crags but got passed by Mark Johnston and Stephen Maniam before the 2nd lap, then stayed in 5th place until the end. Cat Miller made up the Westies contingent with a solid-looking run.

On Sunday I headed over to Arran with Ellie for the Ormidale 10k. It was Ellie's first attempt at racing for well over 6 months. The course is flat and the weather was fine and sunny, so pretty much ideal conditions. I pootled along in 5th/6th position with Nick Emsley until the 8km marker, then made a break and forced the pace to dip under 36 minutes with a time of 35:49 for 5th place. Ellie was 1st senior lady in a time of 43:22. We then jogged up and down Goatfell as a warm down.

Actually, I nearly collapsed with exhaustion and sunstroke on the "ridiculously slow" plod up Goatfell (there was no way I was running after my first experience of raised and sustained heart-rate since September), and consequently was suffering with serious sense-of-humour-failure (witnessed by Johannes, Ana who we caught playing pooh sticks with baby Beatrice on the bridge across Brodick golf-course) as we clambered over the Brodick Castle iron railings to drop several painful feet back on to the road we'd previously run along during the 10K. There's clearly no such thing as a 'gentle' return to exercise, as advised by the neurosurgeons!

Sounds like a busy weekend you guys had. Good to hear that Ellie is getting back into racing mode. Keep up the good work.Chris, you will need to invest in a tom tom or stick to navigating on a claggy hillside.
