Screel Race
All the westies who did not go to this race (ie 99% of the club) missed a fantastic day out on the Solway coast. This was the first race this year where one was in danger of getting sun stroke. It was also the 2nd scottish counter and the first of the shorts. It quickly became obvious that there was more fast guys than you could shake a stick at. I quickly came to this conclusion finding myself quite far down the field as we battered up the forest road. Once into the trees it was cooler, but a depressingly large no of runners sneaked past as i mentally counted how many V50 's were in front.
The run along the summit ridge was great, and i started picking people off. The race was marred by an injury to a Carnethy runner who fell on the descent near the summit. Word was that he may have broken a collar bone or dislocated a shoulder. An ambulance was quickly on the scene, and i hope his injury was not too serious.
So who turned up from Westies?
I think i may have been 1st Westie, followed by Hamilton, Brian, young Deborah Stokoe having another good run and finally Brenda.
Ah so where was Mannie you may ask? Was he at a secret ultra mountain marathon training camp in the Alps? no that was'nt it. Was he doing a big training run over all the 4000 footers? No that was not it either!! I just can't quite remember where Brenda said he was!! Does anybody know where he may have been??

Set off in alarmingly good time from the posh Crutherland House Hotel having a hearty breakfast for, what is about a 2 hr. drive to Palnackie. had been at "a bit of a do",a Wedding on Friday.(Full of runners, but that's another story). Actually one comment made to me ,when at last some men took to the dance floor, "Are all runners (men) as lousy dancers as that guy". Shall let you comment on that one. As Mr. Mixer was saying this was a pluperfect day (some such nonsense from Colemanballs),even too hot!!!!Anyway, a short race so that'll be no trouble at all. Well, in theory, but the cacophonous heavy breathing was soon to be heard over the Solway Firth. This is a cracking little race, but make sure you get your eye in for the "technical descents".Tree roots, then rocky descents, are there to quickly mangle you if you get it slightly wrong. Hope the Carnethy lad makes a swift recovery.

Thank you for your concern Mixer.Long runs, naw. Lots of climbing, naw. Excitment, yes. Thrills, yes. lovely weather, yes. Couple of pints, yes. Rob Roy 0 Auchinleck Talbot 0, yes. This was the Rabs first Scottish Cup semi-final, 1st leg, in 17 years and there was no way I was missing it for some poxy wee 28 minute trot over a lump of rock, and squashed Carnethies. Oh no, this was a crackers with more breaks down the Talbot left wing than John Ascrofts collar bone. Drama, arrests, fights in the penalty box...and that was just trying to get a pie!The "training" is now complete (as I haven't ran a step in 2 weeks due to an injured knee) and I am raring to go!I look forward to seeing you all along the way...and bring your sun cream ya baldy dobber!

Manny you were sorely missed today as were the rest of the Village People .....presumably they were at the match with you ..........there was a time when an injury served only to spur you on ...... as a matter of fact if you weren't injured there were rumours that you'd just batter yer leg with a hammer a couple of times for the pain ..........maybe have a roll around in a nettle bed .........stick pins in yer eyeballs .......try to run Cort-ma-Law wi' nae map or compass ........but now you've come out of the closet and admitted to liking the look of the odd sweaty footballer's thigh as he breaks down the wing ......then good luck to you mate.......there are way too few of your kind running today. Mixer surprised us all with stories of seeing you all in pink on a pride march in Edinburgh but we weren't too shocked........Brenda's tear stained face told the story....... If that's what floats yer boat Gorman then OK. The Baldy Dobber, Bertie Wooster, and myself ......plus all the other non-racing club members will turn out as required to assist you in your mighty endeavour .......

I ran this course in 2007 and 2008, and it's a tricky wee beast. I decided to give it a miss this year after having had my fill of rocks, tree roots and stumps, and (worst of all) Scott McKendrick's rank patter in 08.
Some good results there from the Westies crew, particularly given how congested this narrow course must have been with over 3 times as many entrants as last year. I notice that the boy Evans had another great run to add to his unreported exploits at Clachnaben, and that Westies fielded male and female U23 runners. Must be the first time that's happened for a while, and very encouraging to see.
Sorry to hear about Jon Ascroft's injury, hope he's on the mend soon.
Manny - Taking note of your training plan, I did an extensive pub workout last weekend with Andy Mott, so we should be ready to join you in your quest!

Apologies to Donald, if he had a westies vest on, he was too far in front of me for me to see it. Well done with that 13th place. Also well done to Deborah with 2nd u23 female. Good to see some talented westies turned up after all! PS Manny, i will bring the sun cream for my flesh coloured hair and the magic sponge for your busted knee. See you on the tops.

Dear Jimmy McGregor or what ever your name is - I must complain about the use of the phrase 'Ya baldy dobber' on this website. This sounds like the yobbish language one would hear being uttered on the terraces of a football match when referring to Pierluigi "Angel Eyes" Collina. It is not the kind of hyperbolae one is used to on a upmarket running club website such as Westerlands.

Ach well, you can take the boy out of Kirkie, but you canny take Kirkie out the boy. It's quaintly reassuring that even oor Manny slevvers at the mouth at the prospect of his local team winning the Scottish Junior Cup. Obviously nostagia for Rob Roy's halcyon days has brought back memories from the '70's.....well, that was the last time I heard that term of affection "dobber"!!!Anyway, it was good to see even a modest club turnout at Screel. It's a nice race. I was only sorry that I couldn't make it....I was at the Ayr Races myself. Is that a better excuse than Manny's?

As an ex-Rob Roy Player, I am delighted to hear that some of our supporters are keen to follow a useful sport.....Dobber you should applaud Manny for his loyalty to the magnificent RR and as a good friend, go with Manny to the 2nd leg where he can show you the rules and regs of a REAL man's sport....

Don't know about tears in Brenda's eyes, but just wiping away the tears after reading the Boy Brian's comments about the Village People......can just see us,or not, chasing up Screel in the village people garb singing YMCA...have to grow the tashes though. Our thinly disguised Ms. Whitehouse's comments are spot on.......you have Collina's eyes too my darling.

Dear Mr Major, is it true or just an urban myth that on most Saturdays when Kirkie play, the commentator introduces the crowd for the benefit of the players? In which case i will pass on that dubious pleasure

Fantastic stuff!I didn't realise ther was such a depth of passion for the Kirky Rabs!!!Well the second leg is in (F)Auchinlucky Tablets home ground next week - the first time there has ever been a 2 leg tie in the tournie in over 100 years - so I reckon they are keecchin' thersels' down Ayrshire way.It was quaint to see that they brought a big away support and there very own "Young Team" of delinquents, talented enough at least to find fitba songs that Auchinleck Talbot - quite remarkable really, but of course inevitably several got huckled oot for trying to start a rammy - magic, indeed Dave, it does remind me of the heady 70's when there was 2000+ EVERY WEEK at Adamslie (or at least it seems like it when you are 6!) I vividly remember the ref clearing the players off the pitch and the oppossing (Dunipace?) fans bowling pint tumblers rocks and bottles of ginger at the Roy fans who were batting back with 4x4 fence posts!Ahh, takes me back!I would encourage as many Westies of fitba appreciation as possible to attend in Ayr next week to shout on the Rabs, on my behalf as I'll be bobbing about in a boat in The Minch drinking sponsorship beer!COME ON THE ROY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
