deuchary hill

The Perthshire sub-section of the club was out in force on sunday for the 3rd of Adrian Davies' weekend races.

Brian and I were both looking forward ( ??? ) to the run, he because he'd done the 2 shorter routes last year and now wanted to complete the set, and me because this was my weekend tramping ground and the chance of a race on familiar turf was definitely attractive, and I'd missed it last year through injury.

46 lined up behind the Hilton, the sun shone and the icy wind threatened to blow in more of the morning snow showers.

12 plus miles of forest tracks, moorland and hill paths, a few mucky bits to relish, along with some good stiff climbs.

A couple of hours should be about right.

The first mile is all uphill so sensibly kept the pace down a bit. Why bother?? About 1/4 mile in, left calf went as if hit with a hammer. Race over.

Wave and grimace to those passing onward and upward.

Shortest race since the days of school cross country.

2nd DNF !!!

Hobbled back to car park and now days later still hobbling.

Brian kept the Westies flag flying, finishing well in 2.07, but disgruntled with all the flat bits on the course where he kept getting passed.

Great day for him, crap day for me, but in this game there is always another. !!

You have my sympathies Gordon - same happened to me after 15 minutes of the Ben Nevis Race last year. It maybe saved me from the embarassment of being timed-out at half way though. Went again about 4 weeks later when trying to get fit for Tinto but I got a bit of warning that time and managed back to base without doing serious damage. Fine now but things do take a bit longer to heal at our age ...
