In The Dark Handicap
The In The Dark handicap seemed brighter than normal this year. Perhaps it was because Cap'n Chris had relented on his 'no torches' policy, perhaps it was the twinkling stars in the clear wintery sky, perhaps the snow scattered lightly across the hill or maybe it was the huge red flashing light Ellie had planted on top of the bunker! Did any planes go oddly off course on Wednesday I wonder?!
A short sharp blast up from Clachan of Campsie, on upwards to the snowy hill and then, on reaching the illuminated bunker, a plummet down the hill side, onto the road and then down down down Crow Road until suddenly you have to put some effort in and run on the flat from Lennoxtown back to the start.
A great fun handicap race and well done to all prize winners (...and the best thing is that everyone won, even wee Olly!!)

Tsssk, headtorches, flashing beacons, what's it all come to? Gone are the days when you could depend on an incident such as Archie crashing into a roadworks sign while cannoning down the Crow Road. Disappointingly, there was barely a scratch or a patch of mud on any the runners at the finish line.
Anyway it was no headtorch for me as I managed to clamber up the hill to the (far-too-visible) bunker without being passed...that must be some kind of record! On the way down I caught up with Andy, who had taken a better line off the hill and hadn't been sufficiently handicapped for his local knowledge. I passed a few others along the road, including Cat, who was too busy chatting to Carol to even notice. But there was no catching the well-deserved winner, Bomber MacPherson, who was totally out-of-sight of all of us.
