Carnethy 5

Snow snow snow .... For my first Carnethy 5. Times were apparently down on the last years as the heavy conditions made things hard going. 15 min if you believe the Carnethy site ;-) (That's a fiver you owe me Andy) Great wee race though and I now understand why it is so popular.

Managed to have a good tussle with defected Westie Jason with him catching me on the climbs and me passing him on the descents. Fortunately for me the race ended on a descent. I was too out of breath / out of control to speak to any of the other Westies on the way round but a special thanks must go to Drew for his words of encouragement through the bog. Nearly got a couple of Carnethy scalps on the line but there was too many of them hinging about the finish line for an effective sneak up.

Who will win the "Graham Kelly" award for best televised swearing ??

    Stuart,

I'm not sure Johnston will stomach your 15 min claims, he's been disputing the 5-6 min handicap that I was estimating, using all manner of bar charts and stats to prove that my run this year was worse than his last year...

Anyway, despite it clearly being better, I'm honest enough to admit that I had a rubbish run and have realised that I need to spend more training sessions plodding at a higher intensity. This was the first thing I'd done for a while at anything other than a jog, and it showed. I also need to be a little more aggressive as people kept on pushing past me on the way up Scald Law. It seems that the smaller and older you are then the more pointy your elbows. That's the problem with the older generation - no manners!

All in all it was good to get out in the snow and I really enjoyed the day.

andy, it was easily worth 5mins so you go and make sure Johnston pays up! It sure was a great day out - here's to next year and myself and Pat's 21st Carnethy; I rounded off the weekend with a cracking 70 mile cycle the next day at the Musselburgh Audax.

Great photos on the SHR website, and some of mine a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/westiesjohn/sets/72157614023343934/">here
