Glasgow Parkrun no.9

31st January 2009

A great sunny morning and a record turnout for Pollok Park Run no.9 with 107 runners. Due to re-measuring the course the route was slightly longer than previously, but despite the extra 50 metres or so, Robert Turner still set a new course record of 16:21, even beating Robert Gilroy in the process!

I had my own personal battle with fellow V45 George Taylor of Giffnock who I had never raced against before, but noticed that George had run 2:41:50 at London Marathon 2007, so I was determined to give him a run for his money. We swapped places several times, but in the end George clocked 17:30, and I finished just behind him in 17:31 for 7th place.

Dave Calder became the 6th Westie to venture south of the river of the Pollok Parkrun experience and clocked 19:46 for 28th place.

A great wee run on a lovelySaturday morning in nice undulating parkland, what more could you ask for? My time was probably a pw, but then again, that leaves plenty of scope to work harder, improve my overall fitness and speed, and finally get Don's scalp!!!! Pity I won't be up against him at next Saturday's Masters!

Well done Dave and Chris, good to see Westies continuing to be represented on a regular basis at this event. Parkrun seems to be growing at an incredible rate in Glasgow, which is good for parkrun and good for the city. I wouldn't be too surprised to see another Glasgow parkrun being spawned soon if it continues to be as popular.

There was talk on Saturday about the idea of a 2nd Scottish parkrun, either elsewhere in the Greater Glasgow area, or across east in Edinburgh.

The Pollok Park 5k is a great little blast around the roller-coaster route, dodging dogs and owners, and going into a zone of anaerobic respiration I normally try to avoid.
