Devil's Burdens Relay

24th January 2009

A cold frosty day in Falkland gave good running conditions on the hill once runners had skated out of the ice rink car park at the start.

Westies managed to field 5 teams of sorts, albeit using less than the required 30 runners due to multiple last minute call offs. JD and Steffen took the 1st leg for our A-team who handed over to David Riach on Leg 2. I jogged along with David during Leg 2 until the Leg 3 changeover, at which point we just turned around and headed straight back up Bishop Hill. The final descent off West Lomond was interesting - down hard compact frozen snow. Brian Bonnyman took the final leg to make up a few of the places we had lost towards the end of the stage.

The supervets very nearly defended their title, but for Don Reid letting the lead slip on the final stage. Perhaps running Leg 2 for the B-team hadn't been such a good tactical move! However the supervets did beat our men's B-team by 4 minutes.

The women's A-team did well to finish 2nd, and only 4 minutes behind Bellahouston Road Runners. And the women's B-team did well to complete the course, with I believe Stephanie running Legs 3 and 4.

    Relay Enjoyed it Chris !

Myself and Andy had a good run (Hope I didn’t hold him back too much on my slow up hills) Managed to come in well ahead of a couple of Bella boys who were of a similar pace to me last year. So hoping this is a good sign that I’ll beat all of my times this summer, and a few more of the purple tops too … It seems my cunning training plan of maintaining running fitness over the winter is having the desired effect. That pull straight out of the village and right up East Lomond was a shock to the system though !

Well done Burdens Burds. The B team did well just to pull a team together after it self destructed the night before, and I hope Steph has warmed up and recovered from the leg 3 and 4 epic she 'enjoyed'!! Everyone in the A team also did fab, with Elspeth and Christine doing their funky stuff yet again, Deborah blitzing leg 2, Val and Elsie powering over leg 3 and then I just tried not to be overtaken by anyone (actually thought I was really pulling people in until I realised they were just folks jogging back to Falkland after finishing leg 3, that put me in my place!!) . It's great to get the Westies Ladies up there with the winners, but it would be even better with a bottle full of wine and a box full of chocolate!! Justice for the Burds - give us our prize!!

So maybe 2009 isn't just the year of the Ox, it's the year of Westies Ladies too (and woe betide any mutterings as to them being 'one and the same' )!!!.

Eh Mr Sloth, I hate to rain on your parade old man but Angela and Jethro has already completed earlier stages at a pace and effort considerably greater than your 2nd stage stroll for the B team!

And I'll quietly ignore the fact that I was a minute and a half slower than you on Leg 4....but don't worry, I'll be back!!!

It's a great race but you do start to wonder if there needs to be a limit on numbers?

I really enjoyed it, but apologies to Val for suggesting a rubbish 'shortcut' and starting the sprint for the line when I thought we only had 100m to go and it was actually a mile!

I was delighted to discover today that the womens A team had come 2nd, well done fellow team members and of course all the other westies who took part too.

But the real highlight of the day was listening to Dave and Hamilton singing all the way back to Glasgow!

Well done all, but especially the burdz, as Cat has so eloquently put. Glad to hear it was such a good day out.

Just to say that Hamilton & I are available for gigs to/from races. We do an upbeat set to boost adrenalyn pre-race and some post-race blues to help you wallow in your disapppointment afterwards.

To sample the fare, be at the Tolbooth, Stirling at 8pm on Wednesday 4th March; it almost makes up for missing the Auld Wives Lifts!
