Jack Crawford 10k
17th January 2009
5 Westies made the effort to turn out to the Bishopbriggs Jack Crawford 10k on Saturday. The weather was OK, but it was pretty muddy underfoot and quite windy during the middle of the race. I felt ok for the first 3km or so, but then tired quicker than I expected and lost touch with a bunch of Bella and Kirki runners. Donald Petrie caught me around halfway and dragged me along for a while until the Balmore Road bridge, but after that I couldn't stay with Donald. I ended up with a bit of a mad sprint with Casey Morgan and Bryan Burnett, which I ended up losing. All in all, my slowest 10k in ages. Far more serious though was that Gordon Shannon of Garscube collapsed during the race and was airlifted to the Southern General.
Westie runners:
21, Chris Upson, 0:36:29
43, Owen O'Neill, 0:38:48
128, Elsie Riley, 0:43:27
201, Graeme Orr, 0:46:59
253, Ian Struthers, 0:50:29

Nothing like a bit of mud and some wind to make me go faster, felt much more at home! I was quite pleased to have knocked over a minute off my 10k time to get another PB. I got caught up in traffic at the start though and took 9.30 for the first 2k, didn't see the first 1k marker due to so many people, but sped up a bit after that and spent the rest of the race playing catch up.
Well done to the other Westies, I could see Chris speeding away down the other side of the canal!
I hope that Gordon Shannon is alright and makes a full recovery.

I was not climbing this weekend because horrendous weather had been forecast and, in my dotage, I’ve become allergic to excitement and epics. A gentle cycle ride to a liquid lunch at the Kirkie Puffer seemed a good idea until the Jack Crawford Springburn Cup overran us on the canal towpath. We watched the field go by, cheering on the yellow vests of course, and were dawdling along with the back markers when we came across a huddled group around a fallen runner just by the 5k marker. Luckily he hadn’t fallen in the canal but it was a cold day and there was a real risk that he (and the helpers) would soon get hypothermic. Because of the remote location (1500m from the nearest road) and deteriorating weather, the incident may as well have happened on a mountainside. The mobile was pressed into service to summon an ambulance and leaving my heavy jacket for the casualty, I shot back along the path to alert the race officials. The ambulance was very quick, and we arrived simultaneously at the Bishopbriggs bridge. I briefed the paramedic and handed him my bike and helmet (it was obvious that the ambulance would never get along the towpath, even if the gate had been unlocked). He took one look at my mount and came out with the classic, “Oh I dunno mate…… I’m 49 you know!”I spent the next 10 minutes running around like a mad thing, trying to find anyone interested in helping out.To cut a long story short, we managed to get a recovering casualty helicoptered away to the Southern by about 4pm, just as the storm was blowing in. So much for a quiet life.Based on my experiences in this incident, I would advise race organisers to ensure that the race medical back-up can be easily found at all times and that he has an emergency plan. Such a plan should make handy a grab bag with blankets (and possibly an emergency shelter) and consider how an incapacitated runner can be evacuated (in this case a motor boat or quad bike would have been a big help).

For once the BBC1 weather forecast was spot on - clear weather till 2pm, then increasingly nasty conditions after 3pm. There was quite a squall as I finished!Too bad Archie Cameron wasn't there to whet my competitive spirit! as it was, I felt OK till about 8k / 5 miles, then age (and other, younger runners) began to catch up!The Jack Crawford has its charms - although the pylons and bleak surroundings around 6k aren't one. As I observed to a fellow-warmer-upper, it's one race where you can see the leaders, not once but twice (unless you ARE a leader). It also has a mathematical appeal, eg if I'm at 5.5k when the leading runner passes me at 7.5k, and I am running 7.5 minute miles, what rate is he running at? (See answer below). There was no lucky bag - but there were bananas AND jelly beans!...and who should be skulking around the Concert Hall for Celtic Connections but Dropout Dave and his fragrant consort, Madame la Muff!

answer (I think!) 5.5 minute miles.

Well done Jim for your paramedic duties. Although I'm not quite sure why you weren't running the race!

I couldn't - I was more paralytic than paramedic!
I could come to the Burdens (if you are short), though that may be a jinx.
