Glasgow Parkrun No.6
10th January 2009
I finally managed to drag myself along to the Pollok Park Run. A free 5km time trial held every Saturday morning starting at 9.30am outside the Burrell Collection. There was a good turn out of Westies with Andy Mott as well as myself running. Johnston was lending a helping hand as traffic policeman trying to steer people in generally the right direction, although it wasn't entirely clear who was running the time trial and who was just out for a Saturday morning jog in the park.
The race started off fast, as expected. I managed to resist taking the lead and settled in behind the lead bunch, but lack of race fitness meant I was soon drifting back to around 10th place. The route follows 2 twisting hilly loops through the woods north of the Burrell. In the end I hung on for 7th in 17:23. Andy clocked 20:43 whilst running with a rucksack for some strange reason. Sociable gathering for coffee and scones in the Burrell cafe afterwards. A highly recommended way to spend a January morning in Glasgow.

The bag is all part of a tactical ploy to ensure that I'm used to carrying something on my back before Carnethy. It also gives me an excuse for a rubbish time. What more could you want?

This event continues to grow in popularity, with a record field of 82 starters this week. Having run a couple of times, I felt it was time to put something back in to the event and let others run. If you're interested in volunteering and being named as a "hero" for the week, details are here.
Well done to Captain Chris, who is the best male runner compared to age group yet to have done the Glasgow Parkrun. See the results page then select the Age Graded Leader Board from the left menu. (100% would make you the fastest runner in your age range nationwide.)

Thanks Johnston. And well done at being hero for the day. I felt surprisingly wrecked for the rest of the day after such a short race - or perhaps it was just getting up so early in the morning.

I'm surprised that Chris is surprised he felt so wrecked after a 5km race...that's just exactly how I felt after doing half the Nigel Barge, but what sympathy did I get?????

I guess psychologically 2-lap races are too much to take for some people, and 3-lap races - like the National Cross Country - are mentally almost unendurable. Just imagine if long hill races consisted of laps... for example doing 2 or 3 laps of the Carnethy 5 route... I wonder how many people would drop-out after each lap?

Back when men were men and Westies were mad, they used to partake of the occasional 10,000m track race. Twenty five laps, round and round and round....perfect mental toughness training for the Nationals.
