the law breaker
28 December 2008
The inaugural running of this event brought out 70 participants on a cold but not quite frozen day - ideal for running. Simple idea - straight up and down The Law from Tillicoultry via Mill Glen. Short, sharp, and painful!
The race was won by 17-year-old Robbie Simpson from Banchory Stonehaven AC, in a time of 32:51. The descent looked fast when I saw him heading back, and it turned out to be an insanely quick 10:24 to get back to Tilli from the top of The Law. Al Anthony was second, and Prasad Prasad took third. The young winner caused some hurried rejigging of prizes as much had been supplied by local sponsors Tryst Brewery!
The Westies quartet (all male; only 6 women ran in total) was headed by Captain Chris who finished 13th, just behind the first female Fiona Maxwell to take the 3rd MV40 prize. Graham Kelly was 22nd, and seems to get closer to Chris with every race. Andy Mott summitted together with me, then left me trailing halfway down The Law with a great competitive descent to defend his place and ultimately take another scalp before the line, showing no ill effects from 3 races in 2 days to nab 44th spot. I was the rear end of the festive panto horse in 48th, also getting a credit crunch 3 for 2 bonus races bargain. All 70 finished the race.
Thanks to JD for support and photos. Full results and JD's output for the day can be viewed on the SHR site.

A top day out !
I was on the brink of not doing the race but very glad I got out of bed. Very weird experience descending something you know fairly well ...but only from previous ascents. There were a few bits where a fall would have been sore - very sore in fact.
Not sure about getting closer to Chris with every race but it is fun trying :-)
Guid effort to my fellow Westies and many thanks to JD for the support.
Still reckon Johnston showed a dark side for introducing his pal Andre to the Law Breaker as a first hill race as well !
Cheers

I thought The Law Breaker was a fine place for Andre to start out. Given that his eyesight isn't the best, he wouldn't be able to see how scary the descent was!
All credit to him for coming along and jumping in at the deep end - and thanks to the Westies and other runners for making him feel welcome.
