Strathaven 10k

23rd November 2008

Graham Kelly and I were the only 2 Westies (apart from Drew and Gary Tompsett spectating) at the "Run with the Wind" 10k, an A to B road race from Whitelee wind farm back down to Strathaven.

Six plush double-decker buses ferried almost 300 runners up to the startline at Whitelee forest. The race starts with 3km of fast downhill tarmac, which I covered in just under 10 minutes, trying to match the pace of Nick Reid and Ewan Jack. The race then turns left for a long slow uphill section where I was caught by AthElite's Colin Freeman. I tried to shake off Colin a few times, but to no avail, so we ended up running together until the next short sharp uphill at 8km. At this point more footsteps arrived and Bellahouston's Greig Glendinning launched his attack to pass us both. At 9km we were dropping more steeply down into Strathaven, so I made my last ditch attempt to pull clear of Colin. As we turned into the finishing area, I assumed Greig was well clear, but there was a sting in the tail with a steep uphill turn into a muddy field for the finishing straight. Greig was clearly slowing up, so I had no option but to sneak past him just before the finish line, albeit collapsing immediately afterwards with my hamstring in spasm. Graham had a great run to finish 90 seconds later.

Great runs guys, well done both. I'm sure Graham in particular will be delighted with another massive PB in a fantastic year of running. Sounds like the race finish has been revamped a little since last year too.

Chris, the Bella guy you caught at the finish was less than 30 seconds in front of me at last year's Paisley 10k; clearly he's had an excellent year, and this sharply illustrates the contrast with my illness-plagued 2008 write-off. Indeed, I had entered for this race, but once more was forced to cancel due to ill health, albeit a random occurrence this time. I'm disappointed and infuriated to have missed this enjoyable jog in my home town.

Hope your hamstring injury isn't too bad, and maybe we'll both manage a race soon.

Indeed it was a good day out !

Decided that my first outing as a V40 should be one with a bit more effort than usual. Had a nice wee race with a guy from the Edinburgh Road Club and was pleased to see the road runners die a bit on the two "hills" :-)

The official "chip" times now posted on the Strathaven Striders site confirm:

    Chris Upson 35:18Graham Kelly 36:45

The event is highly recommend - well organised and and in a nice part of the world.

Johnston - hope your luck picks up in 2009 !!!!

Cheers tae Drew and Mr T for support along the route.
