Buchlyvie Half Marathon
Sunday 16th November
3 Westies turned up for the second Buchlyvie Half Marathon (Myself, Chris & Elizabeth). This isn't your average road race - it's mostly along trails following an old railway line so it's flat as a pancake. There are some really big muddy puddles to be avoided (well just the one out & back), plus a weird cross country stylee couple of laps round a mucky field at the end.
Donning my new Westies top I was determined not to "do an Upson", really regretting my full pelt start on my last half. So I hung back and let things wind up gradually. A couple of jelly babies at the turning point (Aberfoyle) provided the necessary fuel to sustain the pace back to Buchlyvie and I clocked in at a PB time of 1:38:24 according to my watch. (Although I've yet to see the official results.) It seems that chasing cows round a field on the outskirts of Strathblane is an effective form of training after all !
How did the other Westies fare ?

Well done Stuart, and thanks for the shout after the turn at Aberfoyle. I hadn't raced (and hardly run) for 5 weeks, and really suffered on this one. My first 2 miles were at 35min 10k pace, and I went through 5 miles in 29.15, but was already seizing up and tiring at this point. I thought I was relatively safe in 4th position for 1st V40, but just before the halfway turn Danny McLaughlin came belting past. I tried to step up to the mark and track him back, but there was nothing in the tank, and all I could do was watch him disappearing off further and further into the distance along the dis-used railway line. I just missed the hour for 10 miles, with about 30 seconds over, and then really struggled for the last 2 miles, expecting John Kennedy to pass at any moment. The final mile was especially tough, with a climb back up to the village, followed by 2 laps of a water-logged muddy football pitch. John was closing me down on every corner of the pitch until my last gasp lunge to cross the line before him in the dismally slow time of 1:21:20 or so, for 5th place.

I'm sure it didn't take me 40seconds to shuffle over the line - Still a PB (just!)
