Glasgow Universtity Road Race, 8th November 2008
6 Westies turned out for a very unboring tarmac run at Garscube ( nb JD; no value judgements in this report about other events the same day!); 5 miles of real speed racing in our home turf! Gibbie charged off at the start but was quickly caught by Dave & Hamilton, the latter letting the side down by donning a luminous yellow thermal top under his Westies vest. 200 yards from the start, the race resembled the first style at Carnethy, as hundreds of runners queued up behind the pedestrian gate leading to the switchback. Somoene obviously forgot to open the big gates. I reckon this mistake cost me ...ooooh about 4 1/2 minutes....well that's what would have given me the 5 1/2 minute mile pace!
Great running conditions, as it must have been at Tinto. I finished ahead of Hamilton, who was looking good at the end despite the inappropriate kit. Behind Gibbie came Archie, followed by Grimorr, who ran in his hill shoes, having forgotten the yellow peril slippers.Ian finished not too far behind. Unfortunately no women tuned out.
YP Thomas of HBT nostalgically followed the original trail, rather than the modern two-lap trail. This involved him turning right onto the switchback when everyone else turned left. It was pointed out that to be truly nostalgic, YP would have headed into Lock27 for a "panic pint" during the race, as he did in the 1986 event. In the circumstances he was spotted heading off afterwards to the Esquire House, the traditional post-Uni Road Race meeting place.

Yes Dave I concur. This event proves the ancient Westerlands maxim, there’s no such thing as a boring race… only a boring runner! My moment of drama came in the 2nd lap when the passenger of an illegally parked car, dissecting the pavement, decided to alight as I was passing and gearing up my pace from 7 1/2 min miles to 5 ¼ mins. This resulted in a rather closer connection with the tarmac than anticipated and a grazed pinkie. However I continued and was delighted to finish a race that brings back fond memories of halcyon days when 6min per mile training pace was common place at Westerlands.

Yes, I missed my Reebok Zipper Slippers - the old NB studs date from 1991, my first Carnethy! - and were well past it, like their wearer....but what about that (UN)lucky bag?? there was left-over Grecian 2000 gel (gosh thanks Des G!) but hee-haw else of any use nor value. Deloitte Bag? De Very Loight Bag, say I. Why, I've heard of runners getting free holidays for 2 in a Nigel Barge lucky bag! Bah Humbug!

It just won't do,will it? Ye canny win with that man Calder hurling abuse at you as you hone your racing technique in utterly resplendent attire. No perhaps not. The old familiar back, that is, the Black W of Mr. DC as he imperceptibly, but undeniably edged further and further up the track, until lost in .....the masses, lost in the switchback(there's a thought).Claims to have done no training at all . Humph, must warrant a Stewards Enquiry. 'Course it's that incline, gradient, slope, but absolutely not to be confused with a hill, coming back onto Maryhill Rd. for the second time, that is just........marvellous for the soul. Eh? Another fine day out in the Streets of Temple.

Just perused the results, which indicate that a certain "junior", one Robin Thomas, finished in a time of some 44 minutes (including his detour as detailed by Dave C.). Is this a retread YP, I wonder?
