tinto hill race

where were you all? Surely not running round some boring tarmac I hope! Instead you could have been part of a record breaking field of 260 finishers braving the biting winds and muddy conditions. The clag on top cleared and once we had fought our way to the top against the wind it was a literal breeze down hill. Everyone's times seemed slower but that didn't stop our own Don Reid and Pauline McAdam winning the Vet 50 titles, well done. Graham, Scott, myself, Johnston and Elsie were well outnumbered by the Bella Road Runners, tut tut.

Indeed ...where were all the Westies ????

A last battle with Don for the year was in order so if I was to have any chance a quick climb was in order. Shortly after rounding the cairn, I could see it was not quick enough. It wasn't long till Don sped past and disappeared !

Was initially disappointed at being about a minute slower than last year but it seemed most folks were the same - cheered up a bit at being a couple of places higher than last year though :-)

Guid effort to those that ran and many thanks to Drew and Mirsia for coming along to support ...a cuddle (fae Mirsia) and a friendly cheer (fae Drew) was much appreciated !

I had an OK climb, summiting in about 31-32 mins, and felt fine to that point, giving me good hope that this year's Lyme Disease interruptions are now behind me (fingers crossed). However, the enforced lack of running then bit me badly as I got an unmoveable stitch just after the turn, and slowed to a walk then a complete halt, losing about 5 mins in the process. Managed to stay positive enough to avoid ripping my number off, throwing my toys out the pram, and giving up in a huff. Eventually it lifted, long after my companion from the ascent Elsie had sped away down the hill, along with others such as Kilmarnock's Dr Roddy who was kind enough to enquire if I was OK. I finished with an enjoyable descent of the lower slopes and regained a few places. The poor overall time is hard to take, but hides some worthwhile positives in my first full-on attempt at a race since the spring. Much more training needed!

Always good to see Drew out on the hill and get a cheer to lift the spirits on the way by. A great turnout too, but as John and Graham have noted, we weren't as prominent as we could have been.

I'm sure some of you will have bothered to scroll down far enough to make it worthwhile giving a shout out to the rather small, but perfectly formed women's team: Elsie and Pauline. Congratulations to Pauline on being first V50. Gutted that I couldn't run, as I missed this race last year. 2009 has my name on it!

Have been off-line due to having to study for a wine exam and so am a bit bemused by the congratulations as I was pretty sure that I'd been behind Janice Smith the whole time and she was definitely at the finish when I finished. We walked back to her car together and agreed that she'd beaten me again. She was going back to Symington for soup while I headed to the tea-room at Carmichael for a giant mug of coffee and an excellent piece of sponge cake> I've seen the final results and am sure that her time must be wrong. Who do I contact?

Pauline - If you can find out what Janice Smith's real time or position was, then I could correct the results on the SHR website.
