West District Relays
Irvine Towns Moor - 11th October 2008
The winter cross country season kicked off with a bang at Irvine Towns Moor for the West District Relays.
The women's race saw a change of leading team on each of the 3 legs, with Shettleston first opening up a huge lead on the first lap, before Kilbarchan took a clear lead on Leg 2, only to be closed down by VPCoG on the deciding final lap.
The Westies women's team of Cat, Liz and Muffy finished 14th out of 20.
Leg 1. Cat 17:23
Leg 2. Liz 20:37
Leg 3. Muffy 19:33
In the men's race, now that the Shettleston teams consist mainly of Eritrean asylum seeking athletes, they are even more invincible than they would otherwise be, and lead the race from start to finish, winning by almost 2 minutes. Westies sported 2 men's teams:
Team A finished 16th of 46 teams:
Leg 1. Dougal 14:28
Leg 2. Chris 14:11
Leg 3. David 14:03
Leg 4. Nige 14:56
Team B finished 38th:
Leg 1. Don 15:14
Leg 2. Dave 15:15
Leg 3. Gibby 17:00
Leg 4. Archie 18:19

Last week saw Archie coming out of retirement, this week it was great to see Gibbie dusting off his racing shoes and having a great race . It must be about a year and a half since he appeared in the black and gold. Just like in the good old days, he ended up in a final 200metre tussle with his nemesis, Bobby Young of Clydesdale. Unfortunately Bobby got the better of Gibbie on this occasion, but our man will undoubtedly sharpen up his racing over the coming season.
Elsewhere, it was excellent packing by the men's team, all within 45 seconds of each other, and finishing ahead of Garscube and Helensburgh. However, a quick look at the results show that, although Dougal ran a pretty quick time on the first stage, he was bettered by some 15 seconds by a certain "Al Campbell!" Surely not Big Al, masquerading in a Cambuslang vest???
Also, it looks set for another season of ding-dongs between Don and me. Not for the first time, the EK Boy Wonder got the better of me by a second. Watch out for your follicly challenged scalp, BW!!!!

Yes, i could not hide a smile when i saw the results on Sat night though I suspect your run was probably better than mine Dave, seeing as i had the 1st leg advantage! Let the battle continue at the Nats.

Highlights of the day (certainly not my running) included the journey down, where Nige, Archie, Dave and Muffy conjured up a cunning plan to boost Westies membership and running prowess. Liz to be offered as wife - only sub-4 minute milers need apply. Admittedly Liz not party to the cunning plan - she was too preoccupied getting her breakfast down (and thankfully keeping it there during run). Post run highlights included teacakes and coffee at Don's car (what a guy, even if you did beat my man by a second), Nige's photos of slumbering (slavering?) Archie on way back, and guess the name of Nigel's company game. Best weekend I have had for a while.

Well I'm glad I've finally found the comments/news page section of the website. That's giving away my length of absence! Fortunately the sub-4 minute milers didn't hang around long enough for my so called 'clubmates' to start negotiations. Just you wait Muffy Calder till I'm fast enough to beat you, with or without breakfast! :-)
