Barrhead 10k

I thought it was about time I did a race, even though I'm still on medication at the moment. For my first solo race since May, I thought I'd pick a nice easy 10k... and this wasn't it!

With over 300ft of ascent and the first 5km uphill, the Barrhead 10k offers more of a challenge than your average jog round the roads (I didn't know this when I entered). I started quite far down the field, not wanting to overdo it, so I had the pleasure of seeing other club runners reduced to a walk after 4km of climbing, as I passed others until the halfway mark.

The race was started by a running legend - no, not Scott McKendrick, but Lachie Stewart, a runner in the Grim old days and a gold medalist at 10k in the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1970.

As I jogged down to the finish in the autumn sunshine, I had time to reflect on how good it felt to be out again, and I hope to be back running again properly in October.

The winners were David Phee of Giffnock North in an obscenely fast 33:16, and Leanne Hamilton in 38:42, one of many Kilbarchan athletes at the sharp end of the race. I was happy with 45:30 for 63rd place out of 363 given the initial incline.

That has to be easily the most crass statement I have seen on this or any other running website.....will you say anything along those lines to Lachie himself...?
