not a race report
it was late last monday night when westies utility man scott mckendrick took the call that lead to a return to the only sport he ever won a legitimate trophy at... the game they call football. after a 5 year enforced sabbatical he took to the field at 6.15pm on friday night of last in a pair of size 8 umbros he found at the pitch side. sporting an unprinted westies captains armband the lad mckendrick put in a sublime first half performance littered with 'dummies' 'shimmies' and good old fashioned wing-play from the central midfield role. a spell on the sidelines early in the second half, to re-apply a coating of wintergreen allowed the crowd to catch up with this balding-george-best-of-the-hills character before gracing the turf once more to score a fine goal straight from his 'head-on-a-stick' locker. unfortunately the match-winning performance was cancelled out with a swollen knee the size of captain chris' running diary, a strained groin/hip/neck/back and a x4 magners post match hangover. was it worth it... just ask the supporters!
again, this is not a race report.

Have you received the call yet from Craig Burley? The SFA must be looking for a safe pair of feet for the Iceland game on Wednesday.

indeed, the feet are the only safe part of my anatomy and i think you will find it is george!!! that really sums up the state of scottish football/ hillrunning... i would propose a more stringent exam for club captain 2009.

Arggggh!! Yes you're right. By George it is George. Craig Burley was someone else altogether. And if I'm not mistaken was the only Scottish player to a score a goal from open play in the last World Cup finals that Scotland qualified for in France 1998. Apparently also - another piece of Craig Burley trivia, is that ex-Westie Jim Hall once sold his house in Newton Mearns to Craig Burley. The story goes that Mr Burley was impressed by Mr Hall's collection of running shoes, so Jim asked CB if he did any sport, and the response was that he did play a bit football, so Jim asked if he played for a club, and CB said that he played for Celtic and Scotland.

Not a race report, but interesting nonetheless, and a good addition to your growing compendium of surrealist ramblings, Scott. Westies welcomes the Ayrshire Dada-ist.

one feels that perhaps the captain engineered his apparent manegerial confusion to squeeze some of his wealth of craig burley/football trivia into what was, at times a perfectly decent report... although the time delay in response from 2 to 3 would point more towards an internet search engine site; 'craig' 'burley'

Ah! No googling required. I just happened to follow with interest Scotland's rise and fall in France 98, starting out with John Collins glorious penalty again Brazil in the opening match, before it all went horribly wrong.

It's a shame Captain Chris hadn't followed marathon racing as closely as football - viz his question to Liz McColgan at the starting line of London marathon "Have you done a marathon before?"

Ah, you see I'm too young to remember the golden days of British Athletics, like some people in the club. I did ask Liz how her toe was, after I'd trodden on her foot whilst pushing onto the London Marathon start line.
