It's hoped that this will be run as a regular race in future rather than just as an occasional World Mountain Race selection trial, and a nice looking website with sunny pictures certainly enticed me and many others to turn up. The Trial brought out fast types who would've liked the first two miles of flat trail running. The front 20 set off at pace. I eased off before the first mile thinking I might catch some folk later. ... as if, it was a shocker !!, with no place for a rest, relentlessly toiling into a stiff headwind up good paths and tracks, up into the cloud and cold, enlightened only by seeing Manny, Brenda and Alan Smith on road crossing duty. Part-time Westie, Stevie McLoone reeled me in by the car park, disappearing into the mist, his uphill treadmill training having been to good effect.. The course was curtailed at the Ptarmigan on account of the weather, what a relief, to come to a shaky stop. There was an intense battle amongst the real racers, with Murray Strain, Al Anthony, Jethro Lennox, Colin Donnelly and Prasad Prasad taking first five close places. In the ladies, Lyn Wilson fought off Elke Schmidt all the way, followed by Claire Gordon. Worth doing again on a summer's day, I'm sure, especially if they get rid of the softening-up flat start.
