Ben Rinnes
26th July 2008
A sweltering hot day at Dufftown Highland Games for Ben Rinnes. Quite a few runners suffered in the heat. Not least Brian Marshall, who managed to throw away an unassailable lead by falling apart on the last couple of hills. This allowed Sean Bolland to win the race, and David Riach had a fantastic run getting the better of Alec Keith and Brian Marshall to finish 2nd. I was pleased enough to finish 8th on such a hot day, even though I was nearly 10 minutes slower than last time in 2003.
5 Westies ran:
2 David Riach 2:11:14
8 Chris Upson 2:25:09
18 Graham Kelly 2:33:37
33 Keith Adams 2:51:19
48 John Hamer 3:07:59

A top day out and well worth the journey north !
I can confirm that heat acclimatisation does not last ...I suffered just as much as everyone.
There was a great talk up to the start of the race by the fellow in charge of the games - made us feel all very special indeed. Fully agree with comments on the day that the course is very runnable for a AL ...not entirely sure that is a good thing though. With no water (other than at the road crossing), I was glad to have carried a wee 500ml bottle although more would have been nice. Nice encouragement and confused looks from folks on the track up Rinnes itself.
Being up north, it was nice to see a few faces not normally at the more local races.
Spent the Sunday having a ramble up Ben Nevis in equally hot weather.
Congrats to all Westies who ran !

Yes,that damned heat.Graham that M C is the Bees Knees.....sure he would be giving it the old " Ladies & Gentlemen these ELITE Athletes will leave this arena to ascend several peaks before even arriving at the base of our Ben Rinnes, and continue with this utmost of challenges.......Ladies & Gentlemen this is a totally superb effort please put your hands together....you will not see them again until hours have elapsed......now the Tug-of-War is about......." Well done all.Sorry could'nt make it.

Agreed, the announcer at Dufftown makes the trip worthwhile without the other added attractions.Hamilton, just a thought but I reckon you could do a fine job as an MC on the Highland Games circuit? You must have a spare ghillie's outfit in your Bertie Wooster wardrobe and you've certainly got the voice and the vocabulary.
And you could set up a side-stall to do osteopathy as well.
How about it? I'll be your manager for a mere 10% commission!

Sounds marvellous Dave, will look out the Deer-stalkers' hat et al. Take along the bench, Add my stand-up routine of Tommy Cooper jokes and.... well, perhaps that's just asking too much.
