Maddy Moss
16th July 2008
12 Westies ran at Maddy Moss with 3 getting under the hour, and Ellie getting 2nd woman (by 3 seconds). I believe that David was 5th at the summit but was clawed back by Kenny, Graeme, Des and Steven on the descent. Strangely enough Scott was sporting a tight-fitting plain white vest, and Hamilton was clad in a suave dark blue helly.
Summary:
9 David Riach 0:54:40
11 Crawford Spence 0:55:26
14 Chris Upson 0:57:43
29 Simon Triger 1:00:51
32 Owen O'Neill 1:01:36
39 David Rogers 1:02:18
42 Steffen Gorgas 1:02:33
46 Scott McKendrick 1:03:30
58 Ellen Homewood 1:04:45
73 Jason Kaushal 1:07:59

A pleasant evening amongst friends. This is one of my favourite races, a long hard climb from the off and then a beautiful swooping descent with a bit of everything. I climbed ok for me and even picked up a bit in the last third, pulling away from some and getting after those in front, then I caught and passed 6-8 on the way down, did a somersault and minced my way over the final rocky section and steep finishing cliff to finish just over 4 minutes faster than last year (despite having a couple of hard runs at the weekend). So only another 5 or six years like that and I'll be winning, Hurrah! The rest of yous seemed to be flying. David continued his fine form of the year, Crawford had another storming run so its sad he'll be leaving the club for a second time, and Ellie ran well despite her ongoing ankle problem. We finished just as the heavens opend and I dashed off to meet the inlaws. Great night.

I managed to resist the urge to lead the pack up to the runnable track, and allowed a few to go past. Once on the main climb up The Law I could see David and Crawford pulling away, but was unable to close the gap. Just before the summit of Ben Cleuch, Elke caught me and we ran more or less together to the summit. Towards Andrew Gannel I was chasing Daryl Philip who I eventually passed before the narrow trod, with Martin Dean not far in front. I thought I would catch Martin easily enough, but wasn't making any ground. Once the path widened Cameron Burt and Colin Glencorse both passed, and made better progress, so I gave chase. And on the final plummet to the finish with feet burning I managed to just edge Martin on the line.
