Cort-ma Law Hill Race
11th June 2008
Perfect conditions for the Cort-ma Law race rendered the man-eating emerald green bog only knee-deep rather than the usual waist-deep. The race saw a fine turn out of 18 Westies.
The fast running helped race winner Kenny Richmond to equal John Stevenson's 1999 course record of 48:16. And fastest Westie by a mile was David Riach, whose rich vein of form earned him an impressive 3rd place. Ellie finished as 2nd lady despite being crocked, and it was great to see the Rt Honourable Archie Cameron back running!
1 Kenny Richmond 0:48:16 (Bellahouston RR)
2 Bob Wiseman 0:49:10 (Ochil HR)
3 David Riach 0:50:49
6 Crawford Spence 0:52:06
9 Chris Upson 0:52:27
12 Andy Edwards 0:53:57
17 Graham Kelly 0:55:35
19 Don Reid 0:55:56
20 Steffen Gorgas 0:56:06
24 Stephen Bell 0:58:48
25 Jacques Penderis 0:58:58
28 John Donnelly 0:59:25
30 Murdo Macleod 0:59:33
36 Ellen Homewood 1:02:24
47 Stuart Burns ???
52 Katherine Kirk 1:09:50
55 Donald Smith 1:13:23
60 Colin Porteous 1:16:02
62 Archie Cameron 1:18:39
63 Graham Benny 1:29:45

A big thank-you to (deep breath): Des, Margaret, Drew, Pat and Victoria for time-keeping, Charlie, Grimorr, Dave C, Muffy and Fiona for marshalling the check-points, Isabel and my wife, Mary, for registration and results, Val and Cat for sweeping, Chris for typing up the results and beating me to the internet to write reports (does that man do any real work and/or sleep?), Jenny for assistance at the finish and Rob, Pauline and Myra for patrolling to stop any repeat of the short-cutting which slightly marred the race last year. (We must look at getting that fence electrified.) The general lack of midges made the whole thing a lot more relaxed than last year except for Muffy who discovered where all the little *******s were hiding. Sorry, Muffy, and cheers, everyone else.

yes, another great Westies production thanks to all the people who made it happen on the night and well done to all those Westies who raced. My own wee race was fine, a steady start trying to stay ahead of the improving Jacques and trying to fight off the stomach ache that was telling me to have an impromptu toilet stop. After a hard slog out to the trig point Stevie Bell eased past followed by Jacques as I tried to stay with them over the still boggy trudge to Leckett. That long awaited toilet stop did take place and seemed to rejuvenate me slightly as I tried to reel in those just ahead. I caught at least one of them, but Stevie was well ahead though I thought I might have been able to reel Jacques in after the climb back up to the fence. Using the threat of Murdo just behind me to spur me on I gave it my all and closed right up on Jacques only to see him flee down the final descent at a fair rate of knots. I was still pushing it to the line as pal John Duffy of Shettleston was right on my tail. I was reasonably chuffed with my time, 2 mins quicker than last year, for my 16th go at this race. Cort Ma Law is where I went on my first ever hill run on a Wed evening some 20 odd years ago. here's hoping I can manage another 20!!

If you're planning on taking toilet stops there for the next 20 years John, I think I'll avoid those emerald green man-eating JD-dumping bogs and find myself some nice clean tarmac to run on. Cheerio folks.

At last I appear to have found a role for my well unfit bod...as a marker in a remote spot, out of reach from walkie-talkies and mobiles! The Cort-ma-Law trig point was a great place to be, as a Colin Baxter-esque view of sunburst through clouds and a double rainbow made me change my plans from photographing the Westy contingent to taking landscape shots. Mind you, I made exceptions for Dave Riach, Chris, and Archie, last seen emerging from a foul-smelling Kirky swamp over a year ago. Welcome back Archie!!

Ah, you see John D, the motivation for me to finish in front of you was the terror of having to wade through poo-infested bogs if I was behind you. Next race I will no doubt be back to my usual pedestrian self, unless anyone else is volunteering for a motivational mid-race toilet stop? As for my final descent; I may have started well, but I soon learnt the painful lesson that I am no David Riach and that mudclaws and smooth hard surfaces don’t mix.
