Cornalees Hill Race

A drizzly dreich blanket enveloped Inverclyde, but that didn't stop a hearty group of Westies travelling to Greenock to take on the proud Glenpark Harriers at the Cornalees hill race. From a spectator's point of view, the weather did literally dampen things, including my camera, but from the Junior race, to the Senior, everyone seemed to have a good time. Captain Chris came in 3rd position and Elsie Riley won the Ladies race for the hallowed Gold&Black. It what turned out to be closer than expected, and with the first ten from each club counting, Glenpark took the honours in the team prize, and their own Andy McCall was overall race winner. The usual hospitality followed with tea and cakes galore, and thanks to Stevie McLoone for another well organised event. Until next year.

Well that was just too lovely for a grudge match. A nice friendly run in the hills, with no doubt a beautiful view spoilt by the clag. A good westies turnout and I was pleased with my first hard run in a couple of weeks, feeling steady if not sharp. Thanks to Stevie and the Glenpark guys for the soiree. Maybe we should return the compliment (the Dumgoyne hncp route late in the summer anyone?)

Also very proud with Chris' photo of me which surely proves I have the most camp running style in the world.

As I've said before, this is what mid-week racing is all about; great fun, even if I am running like a tub of lard.

Thanks for another great turn out from Westies, sorry about not having enough tape out on the summit (but after all the good weather the clag caught us all out by surprise)

PS: I dont know what it says about taste of the Glenpark women but they all seemed to be impressed by the looks of the Westies men. They told me Scott was the best looker - says it all really!!!

Report & Results below:Greenock Glenpark Harriers Andy McCall claimed a record fourth victory in the 12th running of the Cornalees hill race.

McCall took the lead after the first half mile steadily opening up the gap on the chasing group of Stevie McLoone, Danny McLaughlin and Westerlands Chris Upson. He never looked back finally winning with a comfortable 2 min lead over McLoone, with Upson not far behind in 3rd.

Robert Wilson had a race long battle with Scott McKendrick only to finally break clear for 5th place when McKendrick took a spectacular fall just before the line.

Westerlands Elsie Reilly won the Women’s race in a new course record, 10 seconds ahead of teammate Catrina Miller, While Glenpark’s Sharron Skinner held off the fast finishing Terry Wall.

Low lying cloud on the hill caused a number of the 23 runners problems as visibility was down to 30 metres on the summit, but after a few unintentional detours everyone managed to get back off the hill safely.

In the annual interclub challenge the Harriers took revenge on last years winners Westerlands winning by 106 to 112 pts.

Gerard Smith secured victory by the closest of margins in a tremendously exciting junior uphill race. The race starting at Woodstock road followed the path up over yellow hill to the bridge on the “Cut” covered a distance of 600m with a steep ascent of 80m. The young athletes set off at a frantic pace with the leading 6 all closely packed together. By the half way stage Smith had made a sizeable lead, but as hill got steeper and the finish approached Ryan Sinnamon and Shannon Kangley were closing the gap to within metres with Jack Harrington, Craig Knight and Meighan McDade all close behind. As he reached the finish line at the bridge he was put under tremendous pressure from Sinnamon, but Smith had done enough to hold on by less than a stride, with Kangley almost living up to the coaches pre-race predictions of a surprise victory finishing in third.

The rest of the field followed close behind with youngest runner Callum O’Neill recording an impressive 4.36minutes.

Thanks to stewards and timekeepers Jean, Jim, Davy, Mick, Andy, Irene, Dorothy, and Yvonne who braved the wet and cold conditions and midges.
