Wed Night Mugdock Run

For those that missed last night's run, you missed a classic Westies jaunt.

Not satisfied with the route advertised on the website, Captain Chris proceeded to baffle the assembled runners with a series of interesting detours through Mugdock. Virtually every junction was met with a brief stop for route guesswork, producing a kind of bizarre fartlek session that was part running and part vigourous head scratching. Our haphazard progress disturbed much of the local birdlife, a field of cows and a small Viet Cong training camp before emerging back on a recognisable track. The highlight was undoubtedly the adventure playground section, apparently included to satisfy Johannes' request for more obstacles during our runs. (Personally, I still suspect we came across it by accident and Chris just needed a vaguely plausible excuse!)

We finally emerged at the Carbeth huts (needless to say, not from the advertised direction) after rather more than an hour. By this point Nigel was beginning to worry that we hadn't brought gear for an overnight stay, but we followed a rather more conventional route home, meaning we were out for about 1:50 in the end.

All in all, very enjoyable and thanks to everyone for their company on the way round. Quite what the 3 (possible) new Westies made of it all, I have no idea!

Rob,Sounds familiar. An extended cut on the golf course, crossed fields, river crossing(on fallen tree), back on track, sort of chased by a calf (were the herd going to join in,as in the Kilpatricks last year? ), suddenly faced by 2 barbed wire fences on the handicap section.About 1.25.Marvellous.

Sounds like a right Royal Highness Big Al fek up, but great fun all the same - well done Chris on keeping the chaos going...

Glad the carefully-planned run went down well.Perhaps we should try this approach in future of making it up as we go along, and throwing in an obstacle course for good measure. Johannes always complains that there aren't enough obstacles in a normal hill run.

It's true that I like my obstacles. And if they're carefully planned (like on Wednesday) I like them particularly much (a german thing).

Maybe we should follow GMBC's (Glasgow Mountain Bike Club's) example and build our own obstacle course in a forest in Mugdock. Works very well for mountain biking, so maybe it would work for hill running also (?). Our marvellous course would be optimized for having hill-running-type fun. Ahm... what precisely is hill-running-type fun? Taking extra-tight tights and other pieces of clothing for granted, and excluding a café at the bottom serving latte, a high-pressure leg wash, and an artificial-snow bum slide, I think berms, jumps, and stepping stones, all in combination with large amounts of mud to punish failure, of course, might just work.

    Any opinions/volunteers?

Johannes - the route up Stronend on Wednesday is sometimes guarded by an enormous formidable bull, plus there are various route options on the descent involving rusty barbed wire fences and impenetrable vegetation that you might find suitably appealing.

I was hoping to punish failure more leniently than death by enormous formidable bull. Even barbed wire seems too cruel.
