Dumyat Hill Race

7th May 2008

A fine sunny evening for the 35th annual Dumyat Hill Race. The race was won by Jethro Lennox and Angela Mudge.

24 Westies ran with in form David Riach easily the fastest on the night, and Ellen Homewood fastest woman. I did my old trick of starting much too fast and then dropping about 25 places on the climb, although I did manage to pull back nearly 10 places on the descent, which is rare for me, and just managed to catch and pass Crawford before we hit the slappy bit of downhill tarmac, and then held on to the finish unable to close down Neil Arnott.

Turned out to be a great evening for running, not too warm. I decided not to hare off at the start for once, didn't concern myself with times, and ended up no worse off for it. Interesting experiment. Enjoyed my run, felt better at the finish than before I started. Need to rest this fatigue thing though.

Good to see so many Westies out, it gave me a boost seeing clubmates (including spectators) on the way up and down.

Enjoyable evening though felt drained after the Stuc on Sat and had what i thought was a fairly mediocre run. Strange thing was, i was 1st V50 so it was was worth hanging back for the prize giving. Well done to DAVID RIACH & VAL HOUSTON. I HAVE YOUR PRIZES AND WILL BRING THEM TO BL ON SAT.

Can't say I enjoyed the actual race much, as I struggled through the whole thing. Great to see so many Westies out though, with a number of people having good runs.

It was also nice to have Drew, Margaret and Jim out on the hill offering encouragement. Thanks again.

These big races are great aren’t they? You run your slowest time in 12 attempts yet finish 73rd of 260 runners, so you can delude yourself you are a not bad runner, brill! A classic slog up and dash down that epitomises the true essence of hill running in under an hour. Despite being a bit tired after Stuc last Sat, and a 100 mile and 70 mile cycle on the Sun and Mon, I was determined to get over for this fun evening. It was well worth it. I thought I ran not too bad, legs not completely dead to the top and as always enjoyed the rollicking mad descent, Val and Murdo passed me about half way down and I tried my best to hang on to them. Trying to chase Murdo down at the end, and trying to keep ahead of Judith from Carnegie, meant a hard finish all the way to the line. One of the great things about running is that you can finish way down on your best (39m 50s 1993) but still feel that you gave it your all and be happy with that. And, of course, everyone else apart from a few youngsters seems to be doing the same. A fantastic turnout of Westies and some great individual runs. And all rounded off with a curry back in Glasgow – excellent evening.
