Whangie Whizz
23rd April 2008
The weather turned out unexpectedly bright and clear for the first Wednesday night hill race of the year. After a fairly pedestrian start up to the stile, the pace picked up on the track along to the Whangie, with the lead group of 5 slowly pulling away. I alternated places with Mark Johnston, and ran up to the trig point together with Steven Fallon. Once on the descent I dropped 3 places to Steven, Alan Smith and finally Mark, just before the stile. David Riach did well, finishing 5th and taking first V40 prize, and Ellie finished as 3rd lady, only 1 second behind Iona Robertson, who she very nearly caught on the line in a last ditch do-or-die effort.
Well done to all 20 Westies who took part, plus of course Dave and Muffy for organising the race, and all the marshalls and helpers out on the course.

I actually felt a lot better after I finished this race than before I started! Was feeling fatigued for days, but decided to run anyway. Apart from some odd rasping sounds from my lungs which alarmed Rich as he passed me, it went OK, and I managed to run all but the 2 short steep climbs this year.
Around 2 mins 45 quicker than last year, and although I'm not up with the fast Westies, it's yet another PB. Delighted.
Wondering where I can get some of whatever S Triger has been eating these days...

What ever it is, its working. He gave me a real hard time and only a bit of superfast descending at the end kept him at bay!. Good running Simon.

Aye- and well done to the women. It was great to see Brenda down for this race- keeping it strong to the end, and boosting the women's team that comprised Pauline, Val and myself. This was my first shot at the Whangie (having chickened out to marshal last year), and I was fired on by the familiar shouts along the way. Having reeled in the second woman during the descent from the trig point with me close on his heels, Stefen stepped aside to let me pass at the stile. The overly exciting roar of encouragement as we broke over the brow sent the adrenalin sloshing, and nearly saw me lose control to gravity as I tried to beat my Bella rival to the finish line! As my feet became increasingly disconnected from the ground and I achieved that childhood dream of actually flying through the air, I made the split-second decision that crocking myself so early in the season would have been daft- and pulled back in (gracious) defeat. A fantastic Westie evening - thanks to all- and yes, I'll try harder next time.
