Kirki12.5 2008

Well another race and another pb.

On a bright and windy day I turned up with 200 or so others including Mr.s J. Orr & A. Freer for this cracking little race over a demanding course. The bulk of the Westies racing this weekend had been at the Nationals the day before and we were a select few here not running for the Olympians.

12 hills in 12k means you have to work (over the 4-500 ft of climb I estimated) and strong head winds in parts, especially the middle couple of K and the last couple too meant it was more sapping than the still conditions last year.

A Mr. Gilroy (?) won to no ones surprise in a time close to but slightly slower than last year, Johnston continued his storming form to cut 2 or so minutes off his time from last year when he wasn't running in yellow and I am afraid I didn't see how Andy did but will look for the full results.

I was pleased to get 20 seconds off my time on a windy day. I had to slow in the middle (6-7k) when I got a bad stitch but then picked up again. Not super fast but did feel strong and happy with 30th (and I think 12th vet).

So thats a course best at the Jack Crawford, Carnethy and here! Hoorah! 42 and still improving.

As Jason says, this is a great wee course, and the hills and twists and turns keep shuffling the pack.

Robert Gilroy's winning time was almost a minute down on last year, and this year he had closer competition from Tommy Hearle until he broke clear at around 10km. The stiff breeze obviously had its impact on times.

I was delighted to take over 2 mins off last year's time for a PB in my first road race of the year, and improve my position from 30th last year to a respectable 15th, gained by taking 3 places in the last 1.5km (including Joe "Guiseppe" Chambers, still suffering from a cold). Pleasantly surprised to meet my old boss, Gareth McKenna, after the race as he's now an Olympian (and fairly swift already!).

    Results:-1st Robert Gilroy MS 42.3915th Johnston Orr MS 51.0424th Pamela McCrossan FV45 53.37 1st female30th Jason Kaushal MV40 55.12147th Andy Freer MV60 73.18168 ran

Full results and a report are on the Olympians site.
