World Mountain Running Trophy

1995

Condition were good - cool with light wind.

Only one week after Ben Nevis! Legs are like concrete. I had to start very easy. The course turns out to be one of the toughest I've ran to date. Seven climbs and five ascents (work that on out if you can - ed). Had a right chase with Graham Brooks through the race, with him in front most of the way. He climbed well but I caught him on the second last descent with about two miles to go. The climbs were absolutely sapping and one of my most testing runs. I was making efforts to try and catch an Ochil runner a bit in front of me. We had watched each other carefully over the last 2 miles and the final (steepest) descent - then a quarter run to the line was teethclenching stuff. We were both flat out for the line and crossed for a photo finish It was the same time for both of us but I was given the place! Only once the race was over did I realise who it was in the ochil vest - John Gallagher! See Maddy Moss Mass 1995 for an equally epic finish. All said and done, aching legs and all, I was delighted with my placing. If Ben Nevis had not been my priority last week I know I could have improved greatly. I finished in 1.44.44. Lesley finished her run/jog in 1.20.13. A well earned beer tonight!
