Jack Crawford 10k
12th January 2008
Thankfully much better weather than the previous Saturday's Nigel Barge 10k - with cold, still conditions and patches of ice on the canal towpath. I took the precaution of setting off as fast as possible to avoid getting boxed in on the intial narrow path beside the canal. After the first bridge at Cadder I began losing touch with a group of 5 in front. Eventually after the 2nd bridge near Lambhill this group fragmented, and Marco Consani started slipping to within range. I passed Marco at about 8km, then started focusing on Denis Williams. I was closing Denis quite steadily over the final kilometre but ran out of race. Jason, Lynne, Ellie, Jenny and Stevie Bell were also all running, with Ellie finishing as 2nd lady.

It was good to have a few Westies of the female variety at this short, sharp snap of a mid-winter race. Well done to Jenny and Lynne...the female back-up was much appreciated, as was the fantastic spread at the toasty Old Schoolhouse after the race.

Thanks also to Drew and Margaret for the shouts of support and encouragement...even if I never look up, they still make a difference!

Well I am racing a lot less this winter but enjoyed this blast along the canal. I am running quite high mileage at the moment (60 miles last week) with the Lakeland classics in mind for next summer (anyone else interested in the series?) but still seem to be going ok, a 10k pb before Christmas and this was just a 10 seconds slower so not bad even before adding any speedwork. This was a foggy and freezing day and there was some ice on the tow path leading to spates of penguin like running. I didn't see Ellie until around the 2k mark and by then she was 100m infront and I never got her closer. It revived memories of the Polaroid series we battled through this summer but where was Cat? Chris and Ellie had there now customary good runs, Ellie much better now with her blood all where it should be. It was good to see Jenny and Lynne out too, Jenny becoming quite a road runner and Lynne pleased with a pb herself. Now Lynne just needs a vest so she can't hide. Great to see Drew and Margaret too but no Chaz this time?

Oh yeah, a race with more Westies women than men running! How often does this happen? Well done the ladies

Well done Jason. Was that a PB for you? I see that the Langdale 10k route before Christmas was given as "Short" on Athletics Data. For info the Lakeland Classics are as follows:31 May, Duddon14 Jun, Ennerdale12 Jul, Wasdale2 Aug, Borrowdale20 Sep, Three Shires11 Oct, LangdaleI might possibly get to Ennerdale, Wasdale and Three Shires, but not the other 3.

Not a pb anyway, thats 41:21 from the Polaroid series last year, so it was close and frustrating to see afterwards, but actually pleasing as I am had only been doing long slow runs, must be getting stronger, interesting to see how this translates to Carnethy.
