Thanks for that minimalist contribution, Scott. Would you care to expand a little? Perhaps a description of the race, maybe finishing times, and (crucially) who you swore at in the final stages? ;-)

Scott - I thoroughly enjoyed your write up, although I have to admit I did skim read it a bit.

This has to be the first report where the title is more than twice the length of the report. Well done Scott!

Cheers Scott. I can see a career as a journalist beckoning you...

I'm tempted to run this one next year, just to find out for myself what it's all about. This is of course no reflection on your report which paints an excellent picture of the event.

It was fabulous conditions ( blazing sunshine, 28 degrees C, light breeze from the west) as a record field of 856 runners and 482 cyclists took to the field for this exciting event held over Irvine Moor. A crowd of several thousands, eagerly awaiting an exciting finish were not disappointed as , with 150 metres to go, local boy Scott "Chatterbox" McKenrick was hanging on to the shirt tails of Kenyan boys Martin Lel ( winner of London Marathon) and Paul Tergat. Despite the pedigree of the latter two, McKendrick kept up the pressure and, with 50 metres to go, surprised both champions with a lethal spurt to take the title and first prize of $100,000. It was an astonishing display in hot conditions from the sveldt-like McKendrick who has come from getting cuffed by Don Reid only a few weeks ago to beating the best in the world! An emotional McKendrick afterwards said he owed everything to his club, Westerlands Cross Country Club ( a small-to-medium sized running club in the west end of Glasgow) and promised to donate his entire winnings to Westies!

....Well done Scott and, as they say, nature abhors a vacuum. I'm never one to let the facts get in the way of a good story!!!!!!!!

thanks davethat's right, that's exactly how it happened...i remember now. Lel must have been the bloke with the cagoule and adidas kicks on and Tergat was the chap who ran round in a wedding dress with wellies. yes, we had a ding-dong battle alright. can't say i recall 482 cyclists, though at our end of the field...

After the race, Tergat commented: "I thought it was very unfair of McKendrick to call me an 'old bastard' as he romped past to victory, as I'm only 49....erm, 38".

Lel was said to be deflated by the tanking meted out by McKendrick, and stated he may consider retirement rather than racing at the Cashel hill race in 2008.
