West District Cross Country
8th December 2007
Vile cold rainy weather at Towns Moor beside Irvine Royal Academy for the West District Cross Country. Only the toughest most resolute Westies were prepared to run in such conditions. We didn't quite manage a full ladies team, as only Muffy and Pat were determined enough to run. However we got a good turn out in the men's race with 9 runners, and also taking 9th team place. Thanks to Scott for providing the team hats!

As Chris said, a bitterly cold wet day, just perfect for cross country. After hanging arround to cheer on Muffy and Pat I suddenly realised that i did not have my number. A frantic hunt for Chris ensued down at the school. By the timei ran back up to the course, the runners were under starters orders. Muffy shouted she had my number, and a frantic rush began as I tried to shed several layers of clothes whilst Muffy removed the pins from her vest and Helen used them for my vest. (Thanks girls) As usual i could not get my tights over my shoes as i pranced about like a pregnant flamingo. Somehow i managed to get ready just as the runners set off. I sprinted across the field and merged in with the pack and found myself just behind steffan and Hamilton. Now to find out if having had 1 hrs sleep the night before was good race prep. As i eased past Steffan, i told him to stick with me (he seemed to have started at a much more reasonable pace than last week in EK). However, as i closed in on Simon, a crafty glance over my shoulder revealed that i had managed to gap Steffen. I could see Scott about 200 meters ahead and spent the last 2 laps trying to close him down. By the time we were near the end of the last lap, I had closed to within about 20 yards and prayed he woud not spot me till it was to late. With about 200m to go i made my move, keeping a little in hand for the expected response. Sure enough, as i drew along side, there was a sudden expletive accompanied by a sudden and severe injection of pace. However, i was ready and just blasted it all the way to the line. Thanks for the race Scott! Well done to everybody from Westies who ran on a foul day and Drew for encouragment

race, what race! just for the record it was a cry of 'you old bastard', very unwesties-like and so... sorry don it was an instinctive response. i am sure that he held his breath in stealth mode as he surged past then, with a gap of 10 metres in 2 seconds he turned his head and laughed as he secured my 82nd place. as he approached the line he started running backwards with his fingers in the air taunting me to try and catch him if i could, the old bastard. my only consolation was i was running under my racing name jd...sorry john.if possible could you ask for dons new westies hat back, chris. cheers.

Well done all, especially Pat and Muffy for representing the wild women of Westerlands. While you were sploshing around in the mud, I was sipping mulled wine in a pub in Hampstead, sheltering from the rather nasty English weather and breaking up my journey up to Parliament Hill...so I take my hat off to you...btw, is that the same 'Where's Wally' hat that Chris wore to pick me up from the station last night?

Whats this about westies hats?!! Where is mine? Just had a thought though. Might effect my cranial streamlining for those desparate last minute sprints.
