Glasgow Uni Road Race 2007
Just like buses, Grim's race reports...you wait for ages, then two come along! well, that was almost as few as the Westy contingent for this evergreen race on its new "decaffeinated" (almost hill-free) 2-lap route.
Anyway, good conditions for the race, mild and slight drizzle. I joined Ian Struthers to the rear of the pack and let Hamilton jostle up into the elite squad. I soon locked into what must have looked to the punter on Maryhill Road as two stiff auld gits shuffling by, but to me felt like a titanic tussle with an old GUH&H mucker, Dick Hodelet of Greenock Glenpark. Well, dear reader, we swopped places till the last half-mile, when Dick showed his pedigree (and a clean pair of heels), beating me by 20 secs. (Well, he once was Scottish 800m champ!). Not even my Reebok zipper slippers could help me catch um.
Selected results:
1. Mark Pollard (Inverclyde) 24.41
2. Allan Adams (Shetts) 24.43
97. Hamilton Semple (Westies) 33.18
102. Gavin Struthers (Westies) 33.34
150. GrimOrr (Westies) 37.13
171. Ian Struthers (Westies) 39.32
NAE WESTY WUMMIN - SHAME!!
Another detail to mention - well dome the Hares & Hounds catering, who laid on cakes, buns, tea etc for a "contribution" in the social area of the clubhouse. On display was a newscutting of the Road Race ongauns 10 years ago, when the Chunder Mile followed the road race! No wonder such past Westy greats such as Big Al and Archie don't turn up any more, even if Isabel Coombs was loyally in attendance.
This may be my last race before I become an SUV (Super Ultra Vet, 60+) at an undisclosed date. Put me down (oops, maybe not the right phrase?!) for the Burdens!

We WUZZZZ ROBBED ON SATURDAY,but more on that later. A fine dreich Saturday for the Uni. race. Not so fine and dandy for the support package that was Drew, Isabel, and David (R),who braved the November chill to shout us on. So, thanks for that.As Grim said, the sum total of the Westies was Struthers,Struthers,Orr, and Semple. Sounds like a legal team-come to do battle on the environs of Temple and Maryhill. Well your erstwhile recalcitrant registrant, replaced his customary 2 minutes to the off , with an hour and a half. Enough time to be thoroughly warmed up, and totally knackered. No no, not at all. That's enough about the race. What? Perhaps memorable for a certain two absences from the race. No that's right, no stories. Well, that is normally the case. Thing is ....as Ian,Gavin, and I swam round to Oran Mor to watch our boys in blue (did'nt quite have the tee-shirt, kilt, and hiking boots on ), should have been a wet-suit for the torrential rain.....well we were rocked , stunned, stupified, if not a little surprised, to see two rampant closet football supporters, in the shape and form of Dave & Muffy. Not just like the hundreds of us in the scrum, shoulder charges coming thick and fast, and you would'nt even contemplate the possibility of a seat and still seeing the match.Well, there was Dave & Muffy with a prime position, SAT AT A TABLE , AT A TABLE. Nonchalantly, drinking their wine, right in front of the telly,no chance of anyone obscuring their view (Dave would'nt allow it). Naturally they must have at least camped out on the street,on Byres Road, or camped in the Botanics, to have been early enough for such elevated status. Or, did they bribe, or pay the Bar staff a heafty fee? They claim, note claim, that they were only there at 2.45 . What, do you think, Mnnn. I reckon more like 11.00 .So, instead of the race, Muffy was giving some old yarn about taking the cat to the Vet.As you see , I leave it entirely up to you on this one.Mind you ...can see how Dave gets lost in the morning before work.I've just found my way out of their Palace after two days.
