pretty pleased with my run until talked over race with manny who informed me that he tore his calf at the start and limped/ struggled/jogged round... 7 mins and 27 places ahead. when my calf goes, i stop and phone the wife for a lift home. still, he was fast enough off his arse for the banana loaf post race.

so it was manny 14th/57.16 , scott mckendrick 41st/ 64mins, john donnelly,in controversial tartan lycra boxers, 62nd/ 67mins 4secs and brenda paul 136th/ 91mins 36 secs.

my first visit to glenmore since 1983, it was a great setting for an interesting wee race. a quick start required to avoid bottlenecks on single track climb with heather/bracken and tired legs stopping me from picking up any places on the climb. ran for a bit behind jd but the rocking motion of his tartan lycras was making me sick on the climb, so i drew attention to his undone lace and carried on. a nice sharp rocky path descent from the first top with a quick climb to the second and it was onto the fun bit... a good single-foot path to begin with then some heather acrobatics and it was onto the hard packed path/track stuff. not too bad going down but then someone threw in a bugger of a wee climb on the road! reverted back to the old shuffle before a cracking short steep bit and then track to finish. will be writing to santa on behalf of jd...those short/pants are unacceptable, please think of the other runners.

Cheeky bugger, I never even got a sniff at the cake! I was sitting about 6th or 7th when my calf went - again - post Tinto agro, after a rather nippy start to avoid the traffic jam in the heather. I led the pack out of Glenmore before being passed by several greyhounds, but to howls of derision I pulled a cunning corner cutting shortcut and was in the lead once more, shouting "get it right up yeez!" as I scarpered away!! However it wasn't too long before they hunted me down again, but I was feeling great and frisky compared to Tintos lead legs so kept the foot on the gas up through the trees. Just before coming onto the open hill there was a large tearing sound and I thought JD's shorts had finally given way under the stain of thigh & guts, possibly wiping out those behind him, but no - it was my calf stretching to 54 times it's normal length and I said "Ouch, that hurts a lttle bit" in a soft reassuring way so as not to scare my fellow competitors with foul and very loud swearing.I though for a nanosecond about chucking it, but of course that would have been the ultimate in losing face so early in the race, so I hirpled onwards and upwards as runner after runner steadily caught and passed me on both the uphill and downhill sections.Lots of grimacing later near the finish, I managed to put in a final spurt of effort to pull my shortcut trick in reverse, gaining a previously lost place and managing to hold off the fast closing reindeer herder, Mr Smith behind.A least I was able to symathise on equal terms with ex Westie Jim Hall who was timekeeping perched on a wee stool so as to rest his ankle which has a severe case of elephantitas, brought on by a bad case of falling on his arse while trying to run.My excuse for not dancing later at the SHR prize giving was secured and much beer was consumed in attempts to ease the pain, however I redoubled my doseage of alcohol after watching the Scotland game...

I personally thought the tartan lycras and Scotland footie top rather fetching, and as for the kilt he donned later for the disco, well yum, yum.

Aye, ex-Westie, ex-runner, ex-dancer, ex-climber, expert, ex-everything in fact (the ankle's so sore, it makes me limp all the time). I've had lots of advice about the relative merits of massage and/or keeping it up, but its the ankle that most concerns me!Is the Thursday night quiz still a runner?
