tintos dirty dozen
a credible twelve westies completed this years tinto, with eleven recorded finishers. fiirst w past the post was manny in a fine 13th spot. a trifle further down the pack was myself, honest, then don in 44th spot in 38.38, gary tomsett 57th in 39.07, graham kelly (second westie to the top with a great climb. i didnt get the splits but don suggested that his ascent was a few seconds quicker than his downhill!!!) in 57th/ 39.35. next through was rob mcQ, 73rd/40.41 and val houstoun 74th/ 40.42. with the imminent introduction of shr chipping these positions would be reversed as val started 2.45 seconds behind rob. hamilton made the top 100 in a time of 42.40 with brian brennan 130th in 44.39. pauline mcadam had a fine run coming home in 212th, 52.19 with brenda paul in 56.57 and pat mclughlin not far behind in 229th/ 57.52.
the conditions were a fair bit better than last years storm with the going firm to medium in places, muddy as hell in others. as always the path went all the way to the top and there was a nice cup of soup post race although next year i will bring along a couple of small tubs of lurpak for the half roll dipper.
next year i may also get to the registration on time... although saving myself a much needed three quid with xmas on the way i found that my junior race number acquired at the start did not register on the final positions. i apologise to my fellow westies if this affects our team placing, by my calculations we had made the top 20.

greetings cap'n chris... i will put it down to jet-lag, but the explanation is listed in my comprehensive report. i may however be listed as last placed runner in the junior race.

Ah - I see now.My own jetlag meant I hadn't read your first (or second) report properly.

As Scott said ...the weather was a lot better this year (it took me about two days after the race to heat up properly last year) !
I managed to talk my pal Joe into coming for his first hill race - not only did he enjoy it but commented that he couldn't normally buy soup and a roll plus a cup of tea for £3 never mind get a race in as well (he does come from the expensive sport of road running).
Pleased to get under the 40mins but less pleased about getting passed by so many folks on the descent ...really must do something about that over the winter. Congrats to all Westies who raced and special thanks to Drew for coming along to support despite a really sore looking knee.

Ps - regarding splits ... I was just over 26 minute to the summit and just over 13 minutes on the descent. What are other folks ratios climb:descent ?

That explains who the unknown person was ! Trying to control the finish with runners streaming past we knew we had a rogue number (you did shout as you finished that you hadn't registered, but things were happening so fast that I never took in it was you, Scott). So afterwards when we had an extra 97 in the results(which coincidentally was the same number my wife was wearing ! ), we just took the position out of the results due to a) not knowing who it was and b) 97, number 2, hadn't entered. If I'd remembered it was you, Derek would have chased you for the £3 and reinstated you !

First excursion to Tinto did not disappoint. After a busy Sat. morning just made it. Well, had 2 minutes to spare. (Reliably informed by Rob & Val ).So, not much of a warm-up then. Who needs them? We all do.Was having a bit of a tussle with,I think a Carnegie guy, each over-taking one another on the brow to the summit. Then, he and another lad took the grass verge on the top, whereas Semple took the short, bouldering manoeuvre, which eclipsed them. He then barked something about me not lying down! " Well I say". Sadly, dear reader, this ascendancy was soon to plummet with our height as he chose wisely,or was quicker, on the track off the top.Great day out.Sorry Graham, hav'nt a clue about the ratio. Will try to remember to look next time.

Gutted to have missed this, as I had a nasty cold (poor excuse, I know).
Well done all who ran!
Graham - I ran it earlier in the year just for training, but as I had a massive hangover (even at 5pm the following day!) it took me a leisurely 36 mins to get to the summit. I'm sure I was down in 14, post-alcohol trauma notwithstanding, and that included my mate and I stopping to regroup a couple of times. So yes, your descent looks like it could be quicker, but then again, I wasn't trying to beat a horde of other runners (just the after-effects of too much Stella).

if you're interested I was 22.48 up and 10.39 down, so the descent is just under half the climb time in my case - depends I suppose if you're a climber or a descender - or both!!so to get the record you would need to go up in around 20 minutes! and come down in under 10!

Splits -- mmm?? Yep, it flt like I had done the bloody splits by the time I got finished. Top in a paltry 24ish and down in sort of 11ish including a pulled calf due to excessive beering and pies over the last 5 weeks. A bit of a wake up call in the shape of a dark, dark tunnel of agony for 35 looooong minutes. I could take elements of everyones reports for mine - Drews knackered knees, Hammies dodgy descending, Dons missed pre race target (Dave Scott, Ochils), just feeling like Scott - not at the races, etc etc .When I woke up on the Sunday, my legs felt even worse than after a Ben Race.Thank God for drink - it lets you feel good about running backwards, as well as able to read backwards.

Failed to catch Dave Scott due to dodgy left ankle (and turbulence from super fast descent by mystery westie not on entry list!) though i did take a fair amount out of his lead on the descent.
