Morven Hill Race
The lure of the last Scottish Championship race attracted a field of 100 runners, including a good turnout of Westies, to this 871 metre Corbett in remote Deeside. After a short sharp burst on a farm track we were straight into a steep climb up through a narrow trod in the heather. Things eased a bit half way up allowing a sort of slow plod up to the summit into the biting strong wind. I reached the top in 38 mins, just ahead of my nemesis Dave Duncan of Ochil HR and just behind my pal Gordon Pryde of Lomond HR. As usual Dave sped past me and away downhill and Gordon also disappeared, as my wee legs did their best to chase after them. Most of the descent was pretty good, but their were bits of horrible-ness over rocks, and the last trod was narrow and full of wee rocks and holes. I lost 4 places here, but was going as fast as my brain (and legs) would allow me and crept under the 1 hour mark, just ahead of the 2nd lady. Brian Marshall pipped Stuart Whitlie to win the Mens Championship by a point and Elke Schmidt romped home to secure the Ladies' title. Manny had a great run to lead home the Westies in 5th place and Nigel was just outside the top ten. No Westies Women!! I also bagged a few Corbetts over the weekend. Photos here

After tweaking both legs two weeks ago I had only done 2 jogs last week, but wasnt in agony so thought I would give this short race a go. Well it didn't feel short and I'm not sure I am glad I went!
My climb was horrid, having nothing in my legs, maybe because of too little running, too little food or too long a drive. Or maybe Chris was right about me? Anyway I struggled to the top, after several heart wrenching false summits in 46 minutes, with the last supposedly runable ridge into the teeth of a cold wind. I had started hoping to try and hang on to Brian and ended praying I would keep Donald in sight.
As ever I caught 6-7 places on the descent in 23 minutes of steep runnable, stone coverd, ankle busting, trip inducing thrill. It wasn't a nice descent but at least I was moving. As I was 2/3 the way up Stewart W whizzed by and the Brian M so far back and looking so easy I thought he had given up and was joggin in so imagine my surprise when I heard B had gubbed S. Wish I could have seen that!
In the end it was good to see so many Westies there, and I would run this again, but maybe by camping up there. Can I have a rest now?
