Millport 10
9th September 2007
Fun day out to Millport. Fairly cool and grey, but OK for running apart from the strong headwind in the 2nd half.
Aimed to start out steady, but got sucked into chasing a group of 4 comprising Kenny Richmond, Calum Morrison, Conor McNulty and David Phee. David Millar of Irvine had already disappeared off the front to eventually win in 50:51, followed by Alastair Morrison in 52:55. Before long I was also caught by Jack Brown of Cambuslang, and Mark Johnston of City of Edinburgh. I ran with Jack for a while, but once Mark passed they both sailed off into the distance.
I went through 5 miles in 27:25, but this had some wind assistance as I found out in the 2nd half as we turned down the west side of the island into the teeth of a gale (or that's how it felt). I could see Calum and Kenny not far in front, but wasn't really making any ground. Around 6 or 7 miles Conor McNulty faded fast, and I passed easily and then started closing on Calum Morrison. I carried on chasing him down hard but never quite caught him. Calum finished in 56:12, while I was 56:25 for 7th and 8th respectively. Still I was pleased enough to get a 10 mile PB by more than 3½ minutes.
Toni McIntosh was 1st lady, with Alison Winship 2nd - despite feeling quite unwell, Ellen managed to struggle round in 67:34 to finish as 3rd lady, holding off the 4th woman by 10 seconds.

Yes, I'd like to point out that I was 4th woman until the 9th mile marker. After being dropped by some Bella blokes that I'd been running with for the first 3 miles, she was my next target. I sat behind her for most of the race and then found myself reeling her in from mile 7. I think that I managed to do so by taking more direct cuts across the road rather than following the curb all the way (why do people do that?). At the 9th mile, beautiful Largs came into sight across the water and I managed to push myself just enough to pass my opponent as we sailed down the bunglalowed road into the town of Milport. I must have been day dreaming a bit along the final stretch of sea front as a bark from Chris sent my heels kicking into my backside and I almost...wait for it...'sprinted' into the finishing line...although, according to Chris, I was almost stationery by the time I'd reached it as my burst of energy lasted for about 3 seconds. Hey ho. Another fine day oot.Taking some of Chris's very out-of-date Nepali style antibiotics seems to have borught me back to the land of the living today.thank you Jason...couldn't even enjoy the local candyfloss yesterday as even a very gentle Nardini's cappucino ice cream sent my stomach into writhing spasms!

Ellie, like Manni you seem to race better when supposedly ill! You will have to give us a headstart at Jedburgh.
However more worryingly I have just seen the photo's on Chris' blog and NO WESTIES VESTS! You ashamed of us or what?

Oh, cheers guys. Very kind of you...and I was seriously doubled over in pain most of last week with a stomach infection. Not nice. G- Not sure that I have got any faster, but don't puff & pant so much walking up the stairs to my top floor flat, so that's a bonus. Still feel a bit like an elephant with a limp when I run though.Yep, the vests were in the wash, or um... well, to be honest, the vest is so deeply unflattering that the shame of wearing it would have weighed heavily on my shoulders and seriously slowed me down ...so it's a cost benefit analysis...a better Westie performance in anonymised kit, or a slower run advertising the mellow yellows...the choice, dear Jason, is yours!

Hmm, club vest is good for club and you run slower than me, more flattering none club vest is faster, but running for whom? Good for club or faster than me? Hmm!
