Broadwood Loch 5k
16th August 2007
A brand new 5k race organised by Kikintilloch Olympians - and excellent value with a £2 entry fee!
The route took a small hilly loop around some Cumbernauld parkland before running round Broadwood Loch - in bright evening sunshine. The main challenge was trying to avoid the many dog walkers on the narrow trail.
Three Westies made this inaugural event - Johnston, Bill and myself. Johnston and Bill were both pleased to record 5k PBs. I managed 2nd place - but couldn't quite keep up with Kirki junior track runner Allan Ramsay.

Upson's Syndrome - compels the sufferer to attempt to run all races within a 250-mile radius of home (sometimes further in advanced cases of the disease). This includes road and hill races, all of which are undertaken at full pelt. Can be infectious, No recorded fatalities as yet, but unforseen effects may yet emerge. As noted by Obi-wan Kenobi in Star Wars (of Darth Vader): "He's more machine than man now...".
And so it was that a triumvirate of Westies found ourselves at windswept, bleak Broadwood. The last time I was in the race registration room in the stadium was for a corporate meeting when I was told I was getting made redundant, back in 2003. Oh, happy memories!
As Chris notes above, the race was a bargain, and fairly scenic too. My 5k PB was by default, as I'd never done one before! Still, it was a good enough time to start with, and I'm sure there's an 18.XX in me somewhere. Great result for Chris, and Bill was right behind me all the way. Wednesday's hill race didn't seem to hinder me unduly.
And now, I shall rest. I'm off to Dublin to drink my own bodyweight in Guinness for a week. If anyone's doing the Paisley or Glasgow 10ks, I'll see you there.
