Caerketton Hill Race
Another lovely evening in the far east for this mental wee race of lung busting proportions. Me & Brenda drove for 2 hours ,down from the far north, for 14 mins of ecstacy, but it was worth it, really!
I hadn't done this race for about 10 years so had a good reccie of it beforehand, going over the whole course and confident I had a good line.
The start was a ridiculously fast uphill "sprint" to get to the fence stile before a queue formed, and I managed this in about 10th place, wishing I could lie down and sob.
My route choice & game plan went all to pot, by following the wrong people (HBT) instead of staying with Steve Fallon, who lives at the bottom of the hill - me & some trotters choosing the soft, spongy, heathery, direct line to the top whilst Steve took the slightly longer, well worn path, which by the top had given him & Brian Marshall a good 200 yard advantage - there was no way back!
There were still plenty places to fight for on the run out & back to the race summit, bursting my pooper to keep running fast with dead legs, and eventually reeling in Jamie Thin on the steep grassy wall. Flying past him I was immediately on top of Dan Gay, not entirely confident on the steep decent, and passing him just before the stile.
As we 3 came crashing in together towards the fence, there was a 3rd Boggy, Ray Ward, stepping over the stile. I made a split second descision to hurdle the fence at the side, narrowly missing a broken leg on the old rock wall just on the otherside, hitting the ground running and blasted away from the 3 Trotters behind, thus bagging all 3 places in one go!
The final mad sprint down the grassy slope to the finish was intense with thundering hooves behind me, but it was in the bag, much to YP's (Trotters drinking coach) dismay, shouting at me to slow down from the side!
My route error at the top had let Steve & Brian get an uncatchable 30 second lead, with Brian just pipping the win by a single second!
Another great Westies turn out for a short evening race, with Graham, Murdo and Rob all coming home in a 30 second burst. Johnston & Donald sneaked under the 20 minutes with Brenda trotting in a couple of minutes behind, but still smiling...!
Well done Westies!

Well done Manny. That sounds like one exciting way to overtake! And definitely worth risking a broken leg to get past a few Boggies....

Fully agree with Manny's description of this race as being a "mental wee race of lung busting proportions". Like last year, by the time I reached the stile - a wee spew was in order (but unlike the in the dark handicap ...I kept the contents of my stomach intact this time).
In choosing a line up the steep stuff, I assumed Manny had the best choice (since he had already been up) - and followed (albeit a few 100yds behind) and can agree the ground was horrible. Coming off the summit, I squeezed past a couple of Carnethy vests only to have them pass me on the steep descent. Never considered hurdling the fence to regain places though !?!?
Heard similar cries of "Westies SLOW down" with the last effort towards the finish - maybe something to do with the HBT runner a few seconds ahead which I was unable to catch gggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Another top wee evening - well done to those who ventured east !

When I said I'd decided to take it easy after my Helensburgh shenanigans at the weekend, Graham said "you've picked a hell of a race to take it easy!". Quite right! It's a steep wee climb, of the type I'm not very good at anyway, so I trundled up near the back (alarmingly, the photos seem to show me starting right at the back - lazier than I had intended!), jogged between the summits, and took no risks on the way down. On the plus side, I was fresh enough to run again today, which was my aim. My relative position was really no worse than I was getting at the start of the season when I _was_ trying hard, so I must have improved a bit.
When Manny passed me on his way back, he was in 6th, and I couldn't figure how he'd bagged 3rd until I read his report here. Way to go (to hospital), Manny! You are truly barking mad, in the best possible way.
Good fun evening anyway, and another cracking night. I could see last week's foe, North Berwick Law, very clearly, as well as the Ochils etc to the north.
Major disappointment of the night for me was getting number 118 for the first time in a race, but not having my emergency comedy wig and 'tache kit with me to make full use of it.

And apologies to Jason for nicking his naming convention for reports!
