north berwick law race

I went down to North Berwick after work in Edinburgh

to run Law race. Cracking sunny evening after a dull day. Breezy at the harbour but just an ideal temperature for running. A big field and brilliant support from the locals made it feel more like a gala day than a hill race.

Being a short race, we set off at a fair clip from the harbour, up through the town (mostly on tarmac) then hit the

Law itself. I kept a steady walking pace to the top, then had a fairly average descent (legs felt a wee bit wobbly) to the tarmac again, followed by a fast run through

the town to the packed street back to the harbour. Gained a couple of places on the way down but was re-taken by one when I thought I'd barf at the last street.

I finished in about 25:25. 2 HBTs and 2 Carnethies were first

coming down as I was going up, so I guess one of them won it. A great night out!

The atmosphere at North Bewick was electric with hundreds of local people lining the road from the harbour and on up through the houses to the foot of the hill, fantastic support.I had done this racea couple of times the very distant past, but nothing compared to this!Brenda, Duncan & myself lined up (at the last minute!) and set off up the street with a huge cheer from the 200 odd runners and crowd, careful to avoid getting trampled.Jogging together to start with I kept having to rein in Duncan who was keen to be up with the leaders!Brenda played a more canny game and looked quite relaxed going up through the park then houses, with one local couple sitting on deck chairs & table and of course 2 large glasses of wine, shouting everyone on!Duncan started to pull away from Brenda, but faded and fell back again just at the top of the last wee road section before the hill, but once over the brow and hitting the Law proper he was off and there was no stopping him.Just about this point many fast starters are grinding to a halt on the hill, and the wee man was there to bury them! He ran sections of the uphill but generally powerwalked his way to the top passing, in my estimation, about 40 places in the process!!His descent was ever more impressive and I had to rein him back at one point before he killed himself on the rocks as he passed runners at will. With no sign of Brenda since we started up the hill, I cajouled and coaxed Duncan back through the streets, continuosly passing runners.Hew was hurting a lot by the High Street and the local pipe band had struck up a stirring tune to encourage everyone home, and Duncan leathered it down the street taking more scalps (including mine of course) and crossing the line on the point of passing out, to be rewarded with a medal and event t shirt for his efforts.Brenda came in 5 minute later obviously trying hard, and trying to fend off a couple of guys behind her, one of whom outsprinted her on the line, before she shot off to the harbour to feed the fish with strange concoction of sweatcorn and diced carrots...

Both get a solid 10 out of 10 for sheer effort.

    Dying to see results...
