Ben Rinnes 5 Tops

Always great to travel up to Dufftown for this fine race.Worth it alone as we say for the M.C. of the Highland Games alone. He was very good, perhaps the substitute,as yer man usually inflates the prowess of the hill runners to an inordinate degree, and indeed keeps going in the same vein. Mus'nt complain.

So,what was the weather going to throw at us this year?

Last year fine, year before pretty bad to getting worse.

Going to be fine for the afternoon, sunny ,warm conditions.

Well, I have to say,no, I really must insist - it wasnae.

Just how bad was it really. Oh,terrible bad ,so it was ,so it was.

Horrendous. Exaggerate! No,not me.

The rain just kept coming at you, cloud down, up B.Rinnes runners were actually putting on jackets(more than just me),plodding up in shut-down mode.

Still one hell of a way to go and Mr.B. Marshall was tearing up the track.Obviously that is down the track,so i turned and went down.

Well it was tempting.

Back to a great reception from the gathering at the Games.

B.Marshall won

Manny was 4th.

Brian Brennan was after

Jim Hall was there

Hamilton Semple was ever after and after. i.e. late.

(Results not out yet).

As we were getting warm again after a good COLD shower,it was the Tug O' War , Hammer THrowing, Piping and Dancing.

The

Pas de Basque

Pas de Basque and Highcuts

Seann Truibhas

Hornpipe.

Well done again to Dufftown Highland Games for putting on a great show in extremely trying conditions.

It was a great day out despite the weather Hamilton .....Jim Hall was well ahead of me .....and it is noted that in your report you made no mention of your psychology attacks on the way up Ben Rinnes .....shocking examples of attempted speech play ! ...trying to break the steely intent of yours truly ......well worthy of a true Westie. I salute you for your dastardly attempt to destroy the few remaining shreds of willpower i had remaining......your club is proud of you .....now how about turning it on some of these Ochils, HBT, Carnethy creatures ?

Quite right Brian, will try to get the reverse psychology directed properly next time. Must have been frazzled at that point to say nothing of the summit-incapable of speech-well more so than usual.

I had missed this cracking games race the last couple of years due to the Defi, but pleasant return it was not!The weather was absolutely honking and the road and trods over the whole route (except Rinnes) were a slippy, muddy, slimy mess.Places 1 to 4 were established right from the start and, other than some leapfrogging for 2nd & 3rd, stayed that way to the finish.I was confident that I would reel in Stewart Simpson on the way back, but the lack of miles in my legs told the story as Stewart was able to keep a good gap over the last 2 hills.I was glad to get finished without any obvious further achilles damage, but very painfull ankle blisters from my trail shoes. It was a shame for the Dufftown Games as the field was such a mess and the crowds were a shadow of what they should have been, but the show went on, and it was entertainingnwatching the tug-o-war in the mud, and 800 and 1600m ran in almost swimming conditions.

Thankfully unlike Brian, Hamilton & Jim, I had a nice loooong hot shower.
