Arran Half Marathon
1st July 2007
After a lazy day on Saturday sitting on the summit of Beinn Ime, Ellie and I decided to head over to Arran on Sunday, and maybe possibly to jog round the Half Marathon.
Luckily there were race buses to Blackwaterfoot so we reached the start OK. The weather was fairly mild and drizzly, so not bad for running.
I set off with the lead bunch for 6 runners as far as Shiskine, then lost patient with the slow pace, and started to shift it on a bit taking the lead several times before Stuart Gibson of Calderglen finally opened up a slight gap. I decided to sit back and catch him later, and ran side by side with Clyde Marwick of Shettleston until about 6 miles, at which point I thought I'd better get after Stuart. The gap looked achievable to close, but despite ramping it up for the final 3 miles, I couldn't reel him in at all. Still pleased enough to get a PB, and Ellie did well to finish 3rd lady.
1. Stuart Gibson, 1:15:49
2, Chris Upson, 1:17:17
3. Clyde Marwick, 1:17:48
Women:
1. Dhavala Stott, 1:28:19
2. Rebecca Johnson, 1:30:07
3. Ellen Homewood, 1:32:29

Well done both of you, really running well at the moment and obviously not hampered by the ankles. It didnt seem to harm Ellie at the Lock 27 TT yesterday either, not sure Charlie will fall for that one again! I hope this lasts for the Defi and that we see you both running in the hills again soon, we aren't called Westerlands road running club you know, or should we be...(tee hee light touch paper and retire).

Nah. Hills are definitely where it's at for me...was slipping and sliding all over the tarmac on Sunday rather than admiring the stunning views (not sure whether it's time for new road shoes or re-laying of Arran's roads)...and yesteday's Dorchester obstacle course around clapped out irons, washing machines and broken stereos, plus the odd cloud of fag smoke wasn't exactly a salubrious experience ...but given my official ban from hill descents, running on the flat is the only way I can keep enough fitness to survive the Defi-nitely stupid idea without letting the Westie-women side down too badly!

Having spent a copule of minutes chatting to Chris and Ellie after the race, I can confirm that they are most definitely "hill running" missionaries ("have you ever thought of trying hill-running; I'm sure you'd really enjoy it etc"). I'm a keen hillwalker and occassional road race runner but having read some of the race reports on this site I think I like my knees and ankles as they are, thanks very much!
