Cairn Table All Gender Race

A fine day out in the wet and wild in deepest East Ayrshire, this race was well attended by Westies of all sex and/or gender. That is except for our illustrious captain who cried off at the last minute with a desire to nest all day, instead of run on his broken ankle (I exaggerate, of course, but his ankle does have a funny "lump"). David Riach's description of the race as "fun" and "wee" was a little poetic I thought, as we amassed in the clag and howling gale. But this is a cracking race to the biggest cairn I have ever seen, let alone taken about 5 minutes to turn around. Captainess Cat and Secretary Dave swept up the prizes (except there weren't any - more later) by being first lady and first man, or was it vice-versa? We nearly froze to death waiting for the prize giving, only to see the organisers get in their cars and drive away. Prizes "in the post" apparently! But it was a good day, with many of us congregating for a scintillating (and expensive) cup of tea at the nearest motorway services (Drew, we missed you).

A top wee race indeed !

The course was fairly straight forward – across the flat(ish) ground to the hill …up to the cairn and back down to the start again.

More by chance than design I found myself in the lead bunch of seven runners who took off fast from the start – fairly quickly that was sorted out and I took my rightful place a little further back but towards the front of the main group. As David commented in an email, the course is very runnable which is good – the downside is a distinct lack of opportunities to do the “walk a bit to recover” thing. Towards the summit, the fast boys disappeared into the distance and the mist but as always, on the straight "up and down" routes, it was comforting to see them descending i.e. the top can’t be THAT far ahead. I managed to get past one last Kilmarnock vest just before rounding the cairn (which was big …really big) and commencing the descent. Sadly, the Kili guy sped past a few seconds later due to my complete inability to run downhill.

As usual, the gains made on the climb continued to be lost on the descent but thanks to the return along the flat, I was just able to hold on to finish in 8th position.

    Big Congrats to all !
