10km Hat Trick

Three 10km races, two Westies, only one winner!! As Jason and I lined up on the start at Helensburgh two Thursdays ago we realised we had both entered all three of the Thursday night Polaroid 10km races. A challenge was inevitable - who would get the most wins in our Westies dual? Appropriate amounts of beer were agreed as a reward for the victor and then we were off.

Or rather Jason was off as I tried to persuade my legs to move quickly while trying to convince my lungs that the world hadn't suddenly run out of oxygen. Eventually I got into it, but by then JasonIsCruising was way ahead. 1-0 to Jason.

A week later and we were at Clydebank. This time we were joined by Ellie and ran at a good pace in WWW formation for the first 6km. Then for the second time JasonEatMyDust bounded away. 2-0 to Jason.

Finally, tonight it was Dumbarton. And it was fine until 6km when, at the turn, I spied a fast approaching golden yellow vest. As he bounded past I tried to keep up but for a third time JasonSprintFinisher was really strong to the end and it was 3-0.

Well done Jason - a 10km hat trick (I'll buy the pints soon)!!

Speed demons Chris, DavidR, Nige also had good runs at Clydebank and/or Dumbarton, Ellie managed to add yet more races to her rapidly growing tally whilst JD turned up to shout words of encouragement/oggle the ladies at Dumbarton. I really enjoyed this lung busting flat running but now it's time to head back to the hills ....

Cheers Cat. It was fun to have a little burst of road races and I felt better with each one. Last night I got the start wrong as I was too far back and it was very narrow on the bike track. You must have flown ahead of Ellen and me, so after 3k when I saw how slow I was I raced on and luckily saw you so had someone to chase, and had a good last 7k. Passing you at around 6k I thought I had gone too early as you hung in there and were just behind me coming into the last bend. so pride demanded a sprint to keep a record going. Thats our last 4 race Cat!? A well, small things. Anyway as you say lets see how this fitness converts to the hills to see if the winter miles really paid off. Glen Rosa next, will I get round this year?

Indeed! Cat & Jason, thanks for providing disappearing (& last night-invisible) targets to aim for.I've learned some lessons from these Thursday evening dashes too:1. Don't speed up when you feel good...particularly if you're only at the 3k mark and have no watch and no clue where you're going...jelly baby sugar boosts don't last that long.2. If everyone around you looks your mother's age...you're too far back from the start line.3. Sharpen elbows prior to kick off or prepare yourself for a severe blockage problem.4. Block all emails from Mr Upson that begin..."there's this race coming up that I thought you might be interested in..."5. Doing silly amounts of races prior to a fast road race isn't conducive to getting a PB.6. I think Clare F eloquently put it thus: "road races are EVIL!" stick to the hills!Roll on Polaroid series 2008!

Btw, Cat & Jason, there's one more of the series to go: Vale of Leven, next Sunday!

You really are a race monster. I think it is you who has been making ChrisU Race too much! There is a final race in the series but it is the day after Glen Rosa and I refer you to your own point 5 above. Also remember what this is all for, we are a hill running club, the road stuff is only fun training (but I was thinking about a few summer 10ks in quiet weeks to help aim for the Jedburgh half marathon in Oct? Interested?). However well done for sticking in there consistantly in the 10ks Ellie, not easy when you have a lot of racing miles in your legs.

You thought Chris was the one who had infected me with his racing addiction....I'll let you into a little secret...the man responsible is DREW!!! Don't be fooled by the innocent grin; that man's carrying the whip. Heed my warning and steer clear of him if you value your knee joints and your sanity.Check out his Ben Lomond t-shirt if you doubt my words!
