Hunters Bog Trot

I'd set my mind on doing this because Billy Minto kept mentioning it, and he wasn't even there!! Me, Drew, Grim and DonaldS were there though for a short sharp race up and round and round and up the Salisbury Crags. After a rambling briefing from Ivor Normand in a brown blazer and gloves getup (bringing some heckling from Grim about black power salutes) and some sound safety advice form YP, it was Ready, Steady, Trot ... through Hunters Bog and the first fast four were away well before the climb up the back of the crags. I got away from Dan Gay over the top of the climb but he got me briefly on the descent and back through the start. Up and over the Radical Road, I was pondering how to keep ahead of Dan enough to survive the last descent when Jamie Thin came past scuppering my plan. Back into Hunters Bog from the other direction and up the crags again I managed to mix it a bit with Jamie before he strode away on the final descent spurred on by his new Vet status and Knockdhu selection. I was pleased to finish sixth. Al Anthony won from Grant Stewart and Simon Peachey with Veronique Oldham first lady and Eilidh Wardlaw second out 80ish runners. But it wasn't over yet as we were regaled by YP's special prizegiving of choicely chosen items - Buckfast for the Shettleston runners, pork pies for the students and bibles for the bearded runners,,,

  1. Grim as ever said...

OK, now here are the Westy times and places:6th, Dave Riach in 30m32; 60th, GrimOrr in 40m49; 80th, Donald Smith in 44m15; and 84th, Drew in 47m35. This is a tough wee course, a kind of "fun hill run" which the brave undertake with plain trainers! The official length is 4 miles, but the course record is over 25 minutes, which gives some notion of the 3 steep climbs. For the first time in some years, the run felt like 4 miles rather than 5 or more. Conditions were near-ideal, firm underfoot and a cooling breeze. I had a nice Lothian Roadrunners lassie to tussle with on the climbs (thanks Kate Kitchin!) so it felt like a PB even if it wasn't. Surprised to have taken Donald's scalp! and yes Drew, I seem to have taken your scalp too. I'll return it after a good scrub 'n' spin!
