Livingston Road Relays
31st March 2007
For the first time that I'm aware of, Westerlands fielded a team at the Livingston National Road Relays. It's impressive event with plenty of opportunity to watch the lead teams on the transitions.
The route is a scenic twisting course mainly on cyclepaths through parkland, and alongside the River Almond - and was run in glorious spring sunshine. Our Westerlands team finished 34th of the 50 men's teams that completed.
The relay legs are alternate 3.15 and 5.8 mile legs. The Westies splits were as follows:
1. Tom Smith - 19:52
2. Paul Thompson - 33:35
3. Bill Fisher - 20:15
4. David Riach - 38:03
5. Scott McKendrick - 17:39
6. Chris Upson - 32:19
Total = 2:41:43

i am a little dissapointed with the team performance at the relay event on saturday. if every other runner had tried that bit harder to reduce their time by a mere 45 seconds, then my lap time would have been a course record. come on guys... a little team spirit would make an young master very happy.

I'm sure there's something a bit funny about the official times...There's no way David Riach could have been as slow as 38:03, and my watch time said 32:44 and not 32:19 for the final leg.

yesi timed myself at over 20 minutes. check with david riach on this one. according to the times michael diver, who skipped by me on leg 5 recorded 15 minutes exactly!!! tell david if he refunds part of my club membership i will pass on my free minutes allocated. this would however require all runners to have run almost 2 minutes faster for me to have achieved a lap record. i think this would have been just too big an ask.

Yes - I saw Michael Diver was down as 15:00 (as David Mitchell) - which seems unlikley since this is 38 seconds faster than the winning time on Leg 1.There's definitely something fishy about the recorded times.....- David Riach's Leg 4 time is several minutes too slow- Scott's and Michael Diver's Leg 5 times are several minutes too fast- my Leg 6 time is about 25 seconds too fast. All very odd !!

For the record, Westies used to regularly compete in the National Relays back in the 1980's, when stalwarts such as Sheridan, Reid, Cheney, McKay, Kelly, Cameron, Blackley, O'Kane, Thom and co used to strike fear and trembling into those upstarts from HBT. In fact, finishing well in the Road Relays was a prerequisite for competing in the late, lamented Edinburgh to Glasgow Road Relay, the finest point-to-point relay in the UK!Ahhh, those were the days.....great to see Westies back competing in the event!
Good to see that officialdom succeeded in making a mess of the times once again. Serves you all right for taking the times soo seriously!

Pleased to get the National Relays back on the Westies map - although I'm not sure we struck much fear and trembling into the oppostion, despite Scott's high hopes of an unexpected victory!
Talking of point-to-point relays, I'm hoping we'll get a couple of Westies teams out for the Great Glen Relay on October 21st. This looks like a blast!
And yes the SAL officials did make a hash of the time-keeping, although they seem to have magically fixed the results now.
