Westies v HBT v Ochils Grudge Match - "The Return"
Eight brave Westies showed up on a gloriously sunny Sunday to do battle with the Bog Trotters (their numbers boosted by an Ochils comrade). Bedecked in the golden vests and with the force of the big black W behind them they valiantly lined up on the start to try to avenge the original Grudge Match loss. Ben Ledi was to be the battlefield - 4.4miles of hill and 2400ft of ascent to be fought over.
It started at noon (ish). And the Westies had a good start, David R and Chris speeding away from the pursuing brown mob. Further back the field Steffen had started steadily and was chased all the way by Graham K. The woman warriors were fighting their own battle, although the Boggies Claire Gordon was in class of her own. Ellen and Cat bravely ascended keeping Ellidh Wardlaw at bay for most of the way to the top, although she eventually sped off out of sight.
And then, out of the mist the Westies men appeared louping across the peat hags - full of the glory of conquering the summit before any of the enemy Boggies. People kept popping out of the mists at the windy snowy peak - Westie, Boggie, Westie ... all hurtling downhill, trying to catch the person ahead and gain victory for their side.
In the end the victors were the Bog Trotters, but the Westies put up a hard fight. Chris was first, David second and then 2 Bog Trotters followed by Steffen, who was battling on all fronts, with another 2 Boggies close behind him. Graham K fought Boggies on all sides too and then it was a Westies trio of Hamilton, Cat and Ellen and, eventually, Drew with a performance befitting the battle hardened General.
Battle over, the troops laid down their weapons, forgot their grudges and headed off to the pub for a very nice post-battle pint! Very ladeback indeed!
A re-match will be in November. Get training now - your club needs you!

A top day oot ! Big well done to all Westies and a minor Boooooooo to the "individual" who added extra diversion flour marking for the "W"s to follow - don't worry if that doesn't make any sense ...those who were there know what I mean.
Roll on November :-)

I couldn't quite believe any hill could have so many lumps and bumps to it, and decided early on that walking was a much more sensible option, and in my case, was marginally quicker than the mouse-step 'running' that I initially attempted. I felt quite justified in this approach the smaller and smaller Cat became, until she was a microscopic yellow dot disappearing into the mist and following Hamilton's ascent to the heavens seconds earlier. However, I was shocked out of my contented rambling by a terrifying looking David R galloping back over (another) horizon, followed swiftly by a grunting Chris and then Steffen, who shouted something as he passed that I interpreted as "Run Ellie, you lazy..." and I dutifully hitched up my weedy legs and pottered on until he was well and truly out of sight and down the hill behind me.Can't remember much of the descent, apart from spotting a Cat like shape far below me disappearing into the trees, and ending up on my backside again. However, all was warmed and mellowed in front of the pub fire...thanks team W. Still aching with the memories.
