Carnethy 5 Hill Race
There was a great turnout of 24 Westies for the classic gem of a race that is the Carnethy 5 Hill Race. The weather was kind to us and more akin to a spring day than mid-February. Almost 500 runners took part and they were led home by Rob Jebb in 47m 59s with Angela Mudge 1st female in 56m 09s. Border Westie Damon was first yellow W home making the top 20. As for me, in my 18th race I ran my slowest yet, but felt just as hard as all the rest. The usual sprint across the marsh had me gasping for breath, but the queue at the gap in the wall at least gave a welcome rest before the heathery trudge up to Scald Law. Fighting the urge to try and get past people by coming off the trod and into the heather I contented myself by the thought that it would do no harm to have a steady 1st climb and then see if there was scope later in the race for pushing the pace a bit. There were plenty of Westies vest around me at this point, with Tom, Graham, Val and Rob all close by. Off Scald Law and round to the Kips I managed to start picking off a few bodies and just nicked ahead of Val at the turn on West Kip. The descent off here wasn't too slippy and I picked off a few on the descent before settling into a steady pace along to the Howe, hoping to conserve some energy for the long climb up to Carnethy. I had spied Rob, Garry and Shona not too far ahead and wondered if I might be able to haul them in. Shedding my thermal for the Westies vest I took some energy drink down me before settling into a steady rhythm. The slog up proved as hard as ever but I managed to pass Garry half way up and by the top was not too far behind Rob. In the horrible deep heather I managed to sneak past him and had Shona just ahead. I got just behind her at the bottom but flagged a bit across the marsh and had resigned myself to taking a beating, when a few yards before the line on the slight uphill Shona flagged ever so slightly and I decided to ungraciously sprint past her on the line - sorry Shona! A great race and an equally great day out. Well done to all the Westies who finished.

My first Carnethy 5 and a great day out, despite being pipped by JD for the second week running! I had hopes of catching Shona until I fell on the descent off Carnethy and took way too long to get back into any kind of rhythm. In the end I never got close to catching Shona or John (who'd cruised past on the final heathery section).
Clearly Manny judged the summer league races well, as this may be the best weather we get for some months!

A hard race with great weather and a lot of friends. Who could ask for anything more (That should be a song)! I felt strong today and was very happy all along the ridge, keeping Jane close and Hamilton in sight. The descent to the howe started off a bit wobbly and it took me a while to find my descending legs. Does this mean the better I climb the worse I will descend? Anyway fine till the Howe then died big time on the climb up Carnethy. Trudged (good word) up the gully and was passed by Katherine and Elspeth. Then the horrible decent through thick heather or slippy bare heather bark meant I passed Elspeth again as she shrieked and screamed to put me off, but try as I could sprinting at the bottom, I couldnt quite catch Kat. So climbing a bit better, definitely stronger and one of the many PBs today. (Oh and a joker!)

Perfect weather meant no excuse for not getting a PB.Set off super-slow, after triggering the false start !! Just jogged across the opening marsh and plodded slowly up Scald Law to arrive at the summit fresh and ready for running just behind Angela Mudge. Nearly caught her just after passing Bob Wiseman and Adam Ward, but settled in leading Adrian Davis over the Kips and down to The Howe, passing Tom Smith coming off West Kip.Adrian and I passed Angela just before dropping down the final steep bank, at which point Manny caught us as well.I passed Manny again straightaway, but then he got in front on the flat section.I tried to re-group, but Angela was soon trying to get past again. Eventually I let her take the lead into the gully at which point she stormed away. Flagging slightly out the top of the gully I sensed runners closing. It was Nige and Tom Smith - and they both got past just before the last climb up Carnethy. I tracked them round the cairn and then tried to keep in contention on the descent. Tom didn't seem to enjoy the deep heather much, and I kept close enough to be able to out-sprint him across the final section of bog.All in all, much better pacing than my usual dismal performance at Carnethy.

After the madness of the start, the game of cat and mouse began on the climb towards Scald Law. By the summit it was obvious that JD was going to break free and leave the game to Val, Murdo and myself to continue. The pattern was set ...Murdo would pass me & Val on the descent, I would pass Murdo & Val on the ascent and Val would pass Murdo & me on the level ...and so it continued until the final descent. It was during the wade through the heather that Murdo passed at an incredible rate and promptly shot off into the relative distance. I thought I might just of done enough to stay ahead of Val but she passed me a couple of metres before the line.
A top day out and big thanks to Val & Murdo for the sport !
