Greenmantle Dash 2007

Considering the recent gales and rain, the conditions at Broughton were almost perfect for the annual Greenmantle Dash. 6 Westies were there; Pauline, Myra, Chris, David R, Drew and myself. The river crossing was more exciting than usual, on account of all the water that's fallen over the past few days. The descent was a skite on the backside; no change there either.

Being the start of the New Year and all that, I was interested to observe from a fashion point-of-view what running apparel would be donned by the hillrunning community in 2007. I suspect a collective sigh of relief from most of you; Sandy Bennet's still wearing tartan headbands, HBT are still wearing ill-fitting earth coloured cotton vests and I'm still on my 1980's polyviloft faded yellow vest with black trim. What a boring lot we are! Isn't it about time that someone designed a new 2007 edition Westies running kit? Suggestions please? As long as it doesn't end up as nasty as Carnethy's recent attempt!!!!

All-in-all, a nice way to clear the cobwebs after the New Year...unless of course you're Drew and Chris, who ran a road race yesterday organised by Cambuslang

Yes, all very pleasant and enjoyable compared with the recent vile weather for Portobello Prom on Jan 1st, and Cambuslang 10k on Dec 31st.The descent was unbelievably slippery, like a comedy oilslick. I scooted down the first half on my backside, and spent the rest of the descent desperately trying to stay upright. Just failed to catch 118118 headband-man Sandy Bennet on the line.

Made the most of the afternoon by going for another hill run afterwards up Broughton Heights with David Riach, whilst listening to his bizarre theories on how to run faster.

You forgot to mention the mud in the field Dave. It brought back memories of East Kilbride! I'm mentioning it because in wishing Janice Smith of HBT a Happy New Year, I took my eye off the ground and fell. I had to carry the mud up the hill! It clung on right to the end of the race and only started to fall off when I got back to the hall. Fortunately the sign only said to take off muddy shoes. I did suggest to Bill Sheridan that in future, in muddy years' the race should be run in the opposite direction. Mud accumulated during the race could then be washed off in the stream crossing. All this musing on designer running kit has me wondering, would I wear it to run in the mud and will I be able to soak it in a bucket ?

Re team kit... why don't we go for a total re-vamp of the vest, and have yellow with a broad black band, and the words Westerlands written across the front of the black band in yellow text?I guess rather similar to the new Carnethy vest in concept, but it would look a bit more striking and different to all the various scabby old yellow vests that many of us are wearing.

How about this for a new vest design for the 21st Century?
